“There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.” 1 John 4:18
Lyndon Rush will be competing in the bobsled event for Canada at the 2010 Olympic Games. In the video below, he talks about how he got started competing as a bobsledder, his faith in Jesus Christ, and where his courage comes from:
With this year’s tragic death of Georgian luger Nodar Kumaritashvili, Rush’s words about overcoming fear (recorded before the accident) seem even more timely and poignant. In regards to the accident, a Psychology Today writer comments regarding the role fear could have played:
In Kumaritashvili’s case, a tinge of anticipatory dread before entering a particularly dangerous turn might have been enough to make him tense up, interfering with his balance or timing. Of course, we’ll never know for sure. But his death reminds us that, when it comes to dealing with danger, we have always have two threats on our hands: the external hazard and our own internal response to it. (Source: Psychology Today)
Having comfort as our “internal response” in the midst of a fearful “external hazard” is madness … unless, of course, we have a true and trustworthy external source for that comfort. How much greater then if that source of comfort, the Holy Spirit, lives in us and works through us?
Rush’s attitude demonstrates the difference between optimism and faith. We have faith in something, or rather, Someone – God who loves us and is in control of all situations.
“Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death
I will fear no evil, for you are with me” Psalm 23:4
