Starting Over … Again

Written by Darren Hewer

Jesus declared, “I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again.”

“How can a man be born when he is old?” Nicodemus asked. “Surely he cannot enter a second time into his mother’s womb to be born!”

Jesus answered, “I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. You should not be surprised at my saying, ‘You must be born again.’ (John 3:3-6)

After Nicodemus complimented Jesus in John 3:1, he might have expected Jesus to respond by saying “Thanks Nick, you’re SO right.” But Jesus’ response flummoxed Nicodemus: “no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again.”

(John3:3)

Though we only need to be “born again” once, there are many seasons of our lives when other “new beginnings” happen. In her article “A New Beginning” author Carol Van Atta explains that:

New beginnings can happen any day at any time. A new beginning always involves leaving one thing behind and embracing something new and different. However, sometimes, new beginnings may not be of our own choosing or liking.
