Is Prayer Hard or Easy?

Written by Darren Hewer

It’s easy to quote Paul in 1 Thessalonians 5:17 when he advises us to “pray continually” but much tougher to actually live it out. On the back cover of his book A Praying Life, Paul E Little writes:

Let’s face it, prayer is hard! In fact, prayer is so hard that most of us simply do not pray unless an illness or a public setting such as saying grace at a meal demands it. Prayerlessness is rooted in a core unbelief that can shape our lives, even as Christians. Because of prayerlessness, our lives are often marked by fear, anxiety, joylessness, and spiritual lethargy.

Does this sound familiar? On one hand, prayer is easy: It’s just talking with God. Jesus calls us “friend” and invites us to pray to our heavenly Father. But on the other hand, prayer often doesn’t seem

easy. We often neglect our prayer lives, or pray half-hearted or distracted prayers. The disciples even fell asleep (more than once!) when Jesus went off to pray in Gethsemane. (Matthew 26:36-46)

In his article Effective Prayer explores how to pray. “One of the greatest needs in the Christian community,” he says, “is for Christians to discover and experience the privilege and power of effective prayer.” He explains first the importance of prayer and what scripture teaches about it, then practical ways that you can make prayer a more prominent and natural part of your daily life.

A recent commenter on the article said “This writing on Effective Prayer was truly inspiring. So comprehensive and to the point – Praise God!” Check out the article and let us know your thoughts.

I find it difficult to pray on a regular basis. I do speak to God through out the day in my thoughts, do that count?
