“Having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it” (Colossians 2:15, NKJV).
As I was working out in the gym the other day I was thinking about competition. It was as if the Lord asked me “Do you like competition?” I answered “yes I do.” Again I sensed a question “What do you like about it?” My answer was “Winning!”
Then something just started to unfold inside of me. We are in the ultimate competition, to “win” souls and to take our communities for God. The one we are competing with is a totally defeated foe who was completely stripped of all authority. Christ had the victory over him at the cross, and through Christ we can win against this enemy every time! (2 Corinthians 2:14)
God has given us the dominion and authority on the earth and calls us to “possess the nations”. (Psalm 2:8) Our communities are languishing in deep need. Drug houses operate freely with little consequence, marriages falter, needs are going unmet. Our schools are places where our children are taught eastern ways, humanism, foreign gods and alternate lifestyles. Prayer and the Bible are unwelcome in our schools, sickness and brokenness haunts every family in some way.
God has given us the command and the ability to win – to heal the broken hearted, and to set the captives free. He tells us to “humble ourselves, pray and seek His face, and turn from our wicked ways, with the promise that He will heal our land”. (2 Chronicles 7:14) It is our call, responsibility, and privilege to draw the line in the sand, and to rise up through prayer. We have everything we need for the victory. This is absolutely doable!
The question before us, is will we? Will we answer the call to pray and use the power and authority we have been given, and stand in the gap to make a difference in our communities? It’s time for us to win, after all, our competition is no competition at all with Christ on our side!
“For the earnest expectation of the creation eagerly waits for the revealing of the sons of God” (Rom. 8:19, NKVJ).
Questions: Why are our communities languishing in deep need when God has given us authority to” possess the nations”? What is one thing that you could do to help possess our community for Christ?

I would like to extend my most sincere apologies to those of you for whom the term “eastern ways” has caused misunderstanding.
The term comes from Isaiah 2:6 ” For You have forsaken Your people, the house of Jacob, because they are filled with eastern ways; My intent was to point out that there are religious practices from eastern religions that are not in agreement with Christian practices, and the schools are teaching them to our children. This was not meant to be derogatory of any people or culture, but rather to speak to religious practices.
Again, I do apologize for any offence or misunderstanding.
Emmie Stanley
you have given me a lot to think about
My husband is from India and therefore my four children are half “Eastern”. What are wrong with people from the East? I love many of the “ways” of the Eastern cultures. For example, they put a great respect on the elderly members of their family and have high honor and esteem for them. My “hindu” relatives have accepted my family and children into their homes with open arms and welcomed us. I think this type of language that deems one people superior over another does not help people to want to be Christian. It is a real turn off to me, who is Christian and to others.
Emmie, thank you for these encouraging words: “The one we are competing with is a totally defeated foe who was completely stripped of all authority. Christ had the victory over him at the cross, and through Christ we can win against this enemy every time.” While I’m on the treadmill working out, I often sing Martin Luther’s hymn, “A mighty fortress is our God.” No matter what foe we’re facing, God has willed his truth to triumph through us. Wow!
Ms. Stanley sighted ‘eastern ways’ being taught to out students in school? What are ‘eastern ways’? How do they differ from ‘western ways’? Has she ever considered the negative effect of ‘western ways’ on our children? Would not ‘ungodly ways’ been more astute? No region in this world has more or less ungodliness or, conversely, of God’s goodness in it. I found this statement offensive and I had to pray for God not block the blessing that reading my daily devotional brings to me.
