I Don’t: 12 Ways to Save

Written by Claire Colvin

When it’s time to plan a wedding, saying “I don’t” can be just as important as saying “I do”.  Money is often a huge stressor for brides- and grooms-to-be.  A little practicality up front can give you the day of your dreams, without the nightmare of an overrun budget.

The magazines are always telling us that “this is your day, you can have whatever you want!” But for the vast majority of us, wedding budgets are not unlimited.  So how do you get the very best wedding for your money? As Dani Kreeft notes in her article, “12 Tips for the Practical Bride” it’s all about choosing your moment and spending wisely.

She writes:

Your wedding is a big day, but it’s not the only day. You have a lifetime of days to live together and losing sight of them will only create a struggle straight out of the gate. Plan the wedding wisely together and incorporate both your ideas for the day in a realistic way.

Maybe you won’t have a couture dress, foreign flowers or an extravagant honeymoon, but if what you do have reflects you as a couple, it will be what you always dreamed of. I guarantee you’ll look back on it and be glad you didn’t spend anywhere near $500,000 on Ecuadorian foliage.

Weddings are a 50 billion dollar industry in the US alone.   As soon as you get engaged there are a LOT of people happy to tell you how to spend your money.  In home reno shows you often see renovators lamenting that they have to spend money where they can’t see it.  The same thing can apply to a wedding.  Spend your money on the things that matter the most to you, not the things that someone else has told you you should want.

Martha Stewart might have beautiful, antique ring boxes on her cover but unless she’s paying for the wedding, it’s a detail most of your guests will never see.   Take the time to plan carefully, and you might find you can afford that dream after all.  Check out Dani’s article for the full list of “12 Tips for the Practical Bride”.
