Duty or Adventure

Written by Emmie Stanley

For whatever things were written before were written for our learning that we through the patience and comfort of the scripture might have hope. Romans 15:4 (NKJV)

The gift of God’s word has been given to us that we might have hope! The Word is a virtual treasure chest filled with good things for our lives. In it lies the secrets to joyful, peaceful, healthful, prosperous, meaningful and powerful living. This is why Matthew 6:33 tells us to “seek first the Kingdom of God, and the rest will be added unto you”. When you put God first by spending time in the Word, you will experience the abundant life as you live true to God’s ways. He will always go before you and prepare everything you need and bless you in it. Yet too often we have a hard time enjoying and engaging in the Word, and it feels more like a chore or a religious duty then a joyful treasure hunt or precious time spent with Jesus.

So how do we take our time in the Word from being a chore to being an amazing spiritual adventure? The answer lies in 1 Corinthians 2:13-15, where we are told that the Bible speaks in the language of the Spirit, and without the Spirit we cannot understand it. The key to experiencing the fullness and power of the Holy Spirit is surrender. Are you willing to listen to hear God’s voice? Are you willing to do what He speaks to you through His Word? Are you willing to give up that sin that you have been hanging onto and trust Him to give you what you need to get set free from it?

Simply pray: God forgive me for trying to understand your Word in my own carnal strength. I surrender today to study, receive, and live according to your Word. Fill me with your Holy Spirit and teach me. I trust you to speak to me and lead me in the plan you have for me one day at a time.

My son, give attention to my words; Incline your ear to my sayings. Do not let them depart from your eyes; Keep them in the midst of your heart; For they are life to those who find them, and health to all their flesh.
Proverbs 4:20- 22 (NKJV)
