The Power of a Piggy-back Ride

“…the one the Lord loves rests between his shoulders” (Deuteronomy 33:12).
Sitting on the edge of my porch, I waited anxiously for my Daddy’s arrival. “Stephie, I get to ride on Daddy’s shoulders first.” My big sister replied, “No, I am oldest, so I get to go first.” My mind drifted to how empowered I felt when riding high on my Daddy’s shoulders. The heights I used to fear paled in comparison to his stature.
I remember hearing my Dad’s voice, “Okay girls, who is going first?” To my surprise my sister laid aside her desire to be first and said, “You can go first, Liz.” I watched my Dad get on all fours to prepare for me to hop on his shoulders. I held on tight as he stood up.
Changing my perspective
My hands reached the tips of the walls and my eyes could see the outer frames of the doors that scattered throughout my house. My view had changed because I was on my Dad’s shoulders. He was protecting me and providing for me a new perspective. My world as a little girl had been completely transferred once I stopped carrying my own weight and let him carry the load of my weight.
How many times do we miss the opportunity for renewed strength because we do not allow ourselves to rest between the shoulders of our Savior? How many times have we missed the opportunity for an exchange in perspectives–from ours to His?
In Deuteronomy 33, Israel was on the cusp of entering the Promised Land. Moses delivered his final message of blessing upon the tribes of Israel–reminding them of their position in relationship to God. Israel learned all to well that it is not merely enough to have the right person, we must also have the correct position.
When Israel submitted to the authority of God, they were protected and blessed by Him. On the contrary, when they were led by their own will, they reaped the consequences of God’s discipline in a delayed blessing.
Consider your position in your relationship with Jesus Christ. Perhaps, like me as a little girl, you are longing for a new confident view on the shoulders of your Savior–He is worthy of your leap and grip of faith.
Father, Help me to stay close to you. Help me to see my life the way You see it. I want to change my perspective for yours. Amen.
