Many people believe that the Christian faith, and Jesus himself, is irrelevant to their life. If we are going to share the gospel with them, we need to understand where they are coming from … otherwise, the life-saving and world-transforming message of God’s grace will sound like “blah blah blah” to them.
Recently Erwin McManus traveled to Vancouver, BC to interview people about their perceptions of religion, church, spirituality, Christianity, and Jesus himself. He interviewed dozens of people about their spiritual lives (or lack thereof) and filmed the results, which have been produced into Crave: The Documentary. A typical conversation in the video begins with a discussion like this:

Video: Is Jesus merely a “guest” in your life?: Be filled with the Holy Spirit
How can you grow with God? Talk to us
McManus: I’ll say a word, and you say “positive” or “negative”, okay? Religion.
Interviewee: Negative.
Spirituality?
Positive.
Church?
Negative.
Jesus?
[Brief pause] … negative.
What has made people so resistant to church? Religion? Even Jesus himself? Certainly many people during Jesus’ own ministry rejected him. But it seems like most people are not rejecting Jesus because of who he actually is, but rather who they imagine him to be based on their negative experiences with religion.
