What is Success?

Jesus said, “I have come down from heaven not to do my will but to do the will of him who sent me”  (John 6:38).

How do you measure success? By the size of the crowd who cheers you on? Writing a best seller? Teaching a popular class? How many friends you have? How much money you make? How your children turn out?  Suppose the Lord Jesus Christ had measured His life by these criteria. His success would have been short-lived and people would have called him a failure.

I like how Billy Graham views success. When he was asked by Larry King, “How do you want to be remembered? I mean, you’ve had great influence on millions of people all over the world. You’ve hobnobbed with kings and presidents and other very important persons. After your passing, how do you want us to remember you?”

Without a moment’s hesitation Billy Graham answered, “That I was faithful to what God asked me to do.” Success to him was not in numbers (how many souls have come to Christ) nor in global influence (how far reaching his ministry was) but in being faithful to preach the Word of God.

What has God called you to do? It may be unnoticed by others, but if you do it faithfully and heartily, God calls you a success.

“We cannot measure our life by success but only by what God pours through us, and we cannot measure that at all,” writes Oswald Chambers.

Father, I want to be faithful to do the works You’ve called me to do whether I’m noticed or not.  Amen.

Questions: How would you describe success? Does your description of success differ from what God describes success?

You only experience failure when you stop trying. When you get up again and again and again after falling (again and again and again) – you are gaining strength and wisdom. God does not look at failure like man does. When He see’s us fall and then repeatedly get up again, He smiles on us and is pleased with our progress – however small or insignificant it seems to us (or others). No matter how many times you ‘fail’, if you turn them into lessons, you really can’t lose. Plus,’failing’ makes us realize how much we really do need God. Once we come to the point where we can’t take it any more and surrender to Him, we receive the strength we need from Him. Total dependence on HIM is His goal for us. Life is hard – so hard – but we serve a very BIG God. Like the song says …. “Through You, I can do anything – I can do ALL things – cause it’s You who gives me strength – nothing is impossible … “. Much love & blessings to all. T xo

  • How would you exactly know that what you do is God’s purpose or will in your life? This is not actually a question but something to ponder upon. I want to be a housewife, tending my kids and be active in a church ministry. I am the primary bread winner and my job is the least that I would want (being a teacher for 14 years yet I’m not good at it). With a full time job and small kids to tend, spending time in church ministry is much load already. By the way my husband is a Pastor. So God really intend that life for me though what I aspire is biblical also?

Right on Shelly! All things of this world will eventually pass away but the Lord our God remains forever and constant. The only ONE who does in this ever changing world. Have a beautiful day sister!

What does success mean to me? First off, it means that I’ve won the grand prize! I am a child of God and I’m going to be with Him some day. It also means that now I can allow God’s light to shine in me and through me and that by doing so I can positively impact the lives of everyone I come into contact with or speak to (I’m a receptionist). It also means that no matter what I’m going through (and I’ve been through some pretty hairy things)I can stand on my ‘Rock’ who helps me overcome, and pay forward to others what He has taught me in the storm.

Success to me is what God my Father my Daddy gives me to do each day and to complete it under His guidance/If I do not finish the task I continue on the next day unitl He says it is complete.
It is not money or fame/It is my relationship with Him who gives me the strength to succeed in this life that He has blessed me with.
