“Look at the birds of the air…your heavenly Father feeds them” (Matthew 6:26).
“When your words came, I ate them; they were my joy and my heart’s delight” (Jeremiah 15:16).
On a recent morning, a brief but unexpectedly strong wind suddenly blew through town. Rows of potted plants and small trees at a local garden center were upended revealing moist earth where they had previously stood. Within minutes after the wind died down, birds were busily scratching the dirt to find their now exposed breakfast.

Watching their determined efforts, I was reminded of how the Holy Spirit consistently blows through the pages of the Bible. Like those hungry birds we need to be ready to discover the fresh morsels God is ready to reveal.
From long experience those birds knew that the softened ground would produce necessary nutrients. In similar fashion, followers of Jesus know that in the Bible they will find “milk and meat” required for healthy spiritual growth. But like those hungry birds, we must search with purposeful enthusiasm and vigor. God provides. We search and are satisfied.
Thank you, Father, for providing all I need for life and growth. Please help me be persistent to find your satisfying morsels. Amen.
Questions: What does it take on our part for our souls to receive sufficient nourishment?
About the Author Marilyn J. Ehle
Good point about humility, Hailey. We need to be willing to hear what God is saying to us, even if it makes us squirm!
Yes, My soul craves reading from the word everyday!!!
For us to receive sufficient nourishment we need to constantly thirst after the word, Just like when our natural thirst is parched. That cold glass of water fills our cells re-hydrating them. After studying ( not just reading) the Word of God we should be that much more closer to God and what his will is in our lives. I feel like its just not enough to go to church on Sunday and hear the preacher. We need to do our own word reading and seeking everyday.
The first thing that comes to mind is a Humble Heart. Without a Humble Heart we will not be in a place to receive anything the Lord has for us. We must come to Him and His Word with a willingness to learn and be corrected and a desire to grow and change. Pride is our worst enemy and especially when we read the Bible. I encourage you all, along with myself, to take the time before reading God’s Word to examine your heart and surrender your desires and wills to the Lord and make sure you are in a place to receive, with a Humble Heart.
Great analogy Marilyn. Thank you.
