Well, like I said, I don’t know. Rotting in the ground, as you put it, is enough for me. Our molecules originated in stars. Maybe consciousness does stuff that’s as cool as that, but it does it here, on Earth, before death.

Cat, I wasn’t asking whether a human’s physical materials continue to exist after they die, clearly they do (as per the law of conservation of matter), or as you said, “everything else goes back into the Earth to become a part of things again.” Or, in other words, the person’s body rots in the ground.

What I was asking was whether or not what is unique and special about the person (something that remains distinguishable as that person) continues to exist. (Not just the memory of said person, to be clear, but that person themselves.) Hence the questions, “Is it possible that a person’s existence does not end upon their death?” and “If that’s the case, how could we know what lies beyond?”

Of course a person’s existence doesn’t end. I don’t know if consciousness survives, but everything else goes back into the Earth to become a part of things again. That’s enough for me.
