Please read 1 Corinthians 13.
It is an unfortunate fact that many people today have reached adulthood without a good model of fatherhood. Lacking this example, it is difficult to imagine God as Father, to understand His good intentions, His sacrificial efforts, His commitment to us as individuals. And most basically, to understand the true essence of love.
The month of February has traditionally been dedicated to the topic of love, usually the love between male and female. Hearts, flowers and candy all testify to this idea and certainly add color to our concept of romance.
But what if we took a closer look at God-as-Father love? No author can give a more personal or complete picture of love than that which is offered in the Bible.
Because we believe God is in essence love, we can substitute the words “My Father” for the word love as written by Paul. We may just come to understand God as Father in an entirely new and life changing way. Let these truths sink deep into your heart:
My Father is patient.
My Father is kind.
My Father does not envy.
My Father does not boast.
My Father is not proud.
My Father does not dishonor others.
My Father is not self-seeing.
My Father is not easily angered.
My Father keeps no record of wrongs.
My Father does not delight in evil.
My Father always rejoices with the truth.
My Father always protects.
My Father always trusts.
My Father always perseveres.
My Father never fails.
My Father God, I come just to the edge of understanding who you really are and all you want me to be for me. Thank you for never giving up on me. Amen.
TAKE THE NEXT STEP: Experience God’s love (life lesson)
Questions: Who is God to you personally? What words would you use to describe Him? How does this affect your relationship with him?
About the Author Marilyn J. Ehle
Excellent! Will always remember this one to share w/others :)
Great article Marilyn. Actually it was because I didn’t have a strong father figure that I was drawn to my Heavenly Father as a teenager. God more than made up for that lack, and showed me how to love my earthly father inspite of his shortcomings. Eventually, a few years before he died, he came to know the Father’s forgiving love as well and opened his heart to Jesus.
