Exams of Life

Written by Linda McCutcheon

Are you in a challenging season? We have mentors ready to talk and pray with you today:

“Show that I am right, God!  Defend me against everyone who doesn’t know you: rescue me from each of those deceitful lairs.  I run to you for protection. Send your Light and Truth to guide me. Let them lead me to your house on your sacred mountain…I trust you! And I will praise you again because you help me, and you are my God” (Psalm 43, CEV).

Discouraged?  Have lots of unanswered questions on a list? Tired of people hurting you? Me too!  The exam of life has been slapped on our desk with no preparation or time to prepare in theory for what life has given. There was no advance warning.  Don’t you just hate those surprise quizzes? I feel like saying ‘this is not necessary’.

It is so hard when life is cruel and when people betray us, lie about us, and take advantage of us (you get the picture).  It hurts deeply and we can become discouraged and begin to ask WHY?

King David had the same exam.  He tried to live his life as an honorable man.  He fought Goliath when the other grown men cowered in fear, he protected flocks of sheep from wild animals, and he had to escape for his life from a jealous King Saul.  No wonder he said, “Show that I am RIGHT, God!”

We have the resources to help.  We ask God to:

1.  Defend me. We need to believe in our Protector to help us when others want to fight us.

2.  Rescue me. When we stand for truth, many see it and don’t like it.  Lies can come against us because the truth is played out.  King David said to run to God for His rescue.

3.  Guide and lead me. With God’s Light and Truth it will guide and lead us to the correct spot-Himself.  Allow yourself to be quiet before God and ask Him to reveal His Light and His Truth.

Result:  Help. The answer may not be the mark wanted on the exam but God does help because He is God.  He is MY God.  When we acknowledge the Lordship of Him in our life, He takes all our exams and quizzes and defends us.  He rescues us and makes sure He leads and guides us to the next exam.  He cannot be anything but light and truth because He is the creator of them.  He stands for righteousness and goodness because He is just that.

Psalm 90:2, 12 “You have always been God—long before the birth of the mountains, even before you created the earth and the world.  …Teach us to use wisely all the time we have” (CEV).

King David knew that his exam of life was messy and tough but he also knew that God was God and His plan would ultimately lead to the passing grade in life to his Victory. We have to, by faith, believe the same way King David did. Life is about surprise quizzes and exams but in the midst of these, God is there.  By Faith, take these three points today and claim them for yourself.

Then remember the end of this verse, “….And I will praise you again” (Psalm 43).

What exam are you in right now and waiting for the answers? Can you honestly believe that God will defend and lead you through this?  What Faith Journey can you prepare for to get a passing grade in life?

Let’s pray for each other right now.  Father God, I pray for those who are struggling with the pressures of exams in their life.  Help them to remember the stories of past examples of those that made it.  Help them to see that You are the light and truth and to run to You.  Guide them today.  In the precious and all-powerful name of Jesus. Amen.

Questions: What exam are you in right now and waiting for the answers?  Can you honestly believe that God will defend and lead you through this?  What Faith Journey can you prepare for to get a passing grade in life?

It is so very exciting to wait on God and know that He will come through for all of us because He promises in His Word to be faithful to those who love Him and wait on Him in faith! Thank you to all who are writing in here with your hope in our amazing Lord!

God bless you, Ann, for allowing our Almighty God to be the One to handle the situation and being so obedient to His Word as to not take offense and to not take revenge in such a painful situation. You are showing what it means to be an ambassador for Christ by trusting in the Father. May God bless you as well as lead this person to His righteousness. In Jesus’ holy name. Amen.

Again, something that comes at just the right time for me. I just discovered the malicious campaign one person had been running for the past several years, and throughout it all, even though I didn’t know what was going on, I left the battle to my loving Lord of all. Just what I was protected from I now know, and I can see where my trying to engage this person would have been incredibly unsuccessful. All i can say is what is written in this devotional worked, absolutely, for me. Thank you for giving me this concrete explanation.

This is a tremendous devotional, Linda! What great lessons to be learned in this. For me, the most difficult aspect is also the most comforting: that God is always there to help me, and He will always lead me in His Truth – even though I may not like that Truth. Should I choose to rebel against that Truth, then I am also choosing to step out from under His covering, but He is always ready and willing to take me back if I sincerely repent and freely confess my sin of rebellion. How true it is that I can sometimes only see my own way and not understand the Lord’s Way as protective or loving at all until after the fact. Nonetheless, I need to trust in Him and obey, knowing He will always steer me in the right direction, for God never walks in darkness and He will never lead me into darkness. It is only the lies of the enemy that can lead me astray; never the guidance and Truth of the Lord. Praise be to God that, should I fall and listen to the wrong voice, He is faithful to rescue me when I cry out to Him. And praise be to God that He is faithful in teaching me more each day to recognize the sound of His voice as I study and pray over His Word, seeking to know Him in an ever-deeper way.

God bless you, Linda, for a wonderful reminder to me of just how merciful our God is and how compassionate and wise He is in all His ways!
