“To God’s elect, strangers in the world, scattered throughout Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia and Bithynia, who have been chosen according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through the sanctifying work of the Spirit, for obedience to Jesus Christ and sprinkling by His blood” (1 Peter 1:1, 2)
You have been chosen by God. In these verses, Peter not only explains how we were chosen and by what power we were chosen, but also why or for what purpose we were chosen.
You have been chosen according to the foreknowledge of God the Father. You have been chosen through the sanctifying work of the Holy Spirit. You have been chosen for obedience to Jesus Christ. Consider the last statement, you have been chosen for obedience
You were chosen – not solely to know Jesus Christ, not only to receive eternal life with God – but you were chosen so that you would obey Jesus. It is your purpose, the thing you were made for, your life’s mission.
Obedience is not mindlessly or begrudgingly following a set of rules that are thousands of years old. What Peter is talking about is willingly submitting to God’s way and choosing to allow the precepts of Jesus to guide my life, as well as readily accepting the forgiveness supplied to me through Jesus’ shed blood.
This is what we were chosen for.
Holy God, help me to understand that I will find my purpose in life by obeying Jesus. I know in my head that I will never find fulfillment and satisfaction in life outside of You; let that knowledge transform me into Your obedient servant. Amen.
