“Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” (Matthew 6:34)
Trust. Hmmm. Trust…the word was rolling around in my mind when I woke up this morning. Such a simple word, but it can be the hardest thing to do.
It was easier to trust as a child than as an adult, for me. As a kid, I trusted that my best friend would never hurt me (I found out that wasn’t true). I trusted that what my teacher said was ALWAYS right (found out that wasn’t true either). The list could go on, but as we know, as time goes on the list of things that we CANNOT trust…grows.
We live in a world full of sin. Satan has made sure that we don’t feel comfortable trusting in things. He has made sure that we trust things that we can see more than things that we cannot see. If we can see it, we can believe it right? That’s one of Satan’s many lies.
This brings me back to this morning. Trust…trusting God. The problem that I was having was that I think sometimes we trust that God will do something because it is our conviction that he said he would, but the problem is that we might have misunderstood the promise.
Many times when we read the Bible we do it with an objective in mind, which can cloud our interpretation of what God actually meant. Matthew 6:25-34 is a good example. Jesus is talking about the fact that we do not need to worry because God will take care of our needs. Does that mean that we do not have to plan or that don’t have to work because God will provide? No – God expects to be good stewards. But one could look at these texts and hope that it means that we will never have trouble because Jesus said not to worry.
So, can we trust God? We know in our hearts that answer to that question. Just make sure that you ask for the Holy Spirit to guide you as you search the scriptures for answers or as you pray for guidance in your life.
If we can trust NOTHING else, we can always trust God to have our eternal salvation in mind.

What Do You Fear?
What do you fear, and why? Is it holding you back from realizing your full potential?

gw,
I just want to second what Claire said, don’t give up! Keep going! In struggling with weight loss I can say from experience that it is a difficult journey because it’s so easy to slip back into our old habit patterns and gain all the weight back that we lost. Instead, daily celebrate where you have come from and set yourself smaller goals to celebrate…for example, one week with no weight gain, go on a date with your husband, then losing weight the following week, treat yourself to a facial at the spa, and keep setting measurable smaller goals you can celebrate until you have lost the remaining 20 pounds. You Go Girl! You can do this!
Claire thank you so much for the encouragement! I have been taking zumba & weight lifting classes but recently was invited to go on a 3 mile walk/run with a group…I think I will try it based on your advise!
gw – It’s fantastic that you’ve lost 40 pounds! That must feel amazing. I know it’s frustrating to get to last part of a weight loss journey and feel that things have stagnated. It’s very common to find the the last part is the hardest. It’s a little bit like when you’re moving. When you first clear out a room you take down the art, move the furniture, and once the big things are gone the room looks like it’s almost empty. But then there is a few things in the closet, and a couple of random things behind the door and those last few pieces seem to take almost as long an moving the big stuff and each payoff doesn’t have the impact that the big changes did. You’ve already made HUGE improvements, the last bit is trickier, but you can definitely do it. You’ve already proven that you can — you’ve lost twice as much weight as what is left over.
So how do you get rid of that last bit?
I am not a doctor, or a trainer, but here are a few things that might help:
1. Change up your workout routine. If you do the same exercise, or the same sort of exercise your body gets very efficient at it. Which is good for you body, but slows down your weight loss. Give yourself a new challenge. This is why pro athletes cross train – it works a different set of muscles, or endurance instead of strength. If you run, try swimming. If you bike try a team sport. If you lift, try kayaking. The idea is to give your body a completely different task. In addition to working new muscles, because you’re not as good at it you’ll be more aware of how hard you are working. Pay attention to your breathing, be safe and enjoy the challenge.
2. Get really specific about your food. Sometimes when we’ve made great eating choices, over time we are not quite as careful. If you used to measure your food and you stopped because you “know what 1/2C looks like” start measuring again. See if your portions have increased just a little. You mentioned using a specific program, go back and reread the material they gave you at the very beginning. Are you still doing all the things you used to do?
3. If you can afford it, hire a trainer, even just for one of your workouts per week. A trainer will have a great knowledge of how to get you past this plateau.
Remember that this plateauing is very common. It does not mean that you have failed and it certainly does NOT mean that you are not working hard enough. It’s just a phase on the road, one more challenge to work through. If you can, try to see this as a GOOD thing. You’ve come so far, you’ve worked so hard that you’re here at the final hill. Get passed this and you’ll have done it! It’s going to feel incredible. I know that it’s hard and you probably feel like it should be over by now. You’re so close. Keep going, finish this. You CAN do it – you’ve already done so much.
Hi Trisha! Thank you so much for your encouragement. Your words remind me of the promise of God in Isaiah 61:7:”Instead of your [former] shame you shall have a twofold recompense; instead of dishonor and reproach [your people] shall rejoice in their portion. Therefore in their land they shall possess double [what they had forfeited]; everlasting joy shall be theirs.” [Amplified Bible] May this verse be a promise that is seen in your life, in my life, and in each of us who are trusting in the Lord God Almighty for His abundant life! Amen!
An important correction indeed! I have fixed it, thanks for letting me know.
This season in my life was one of the hardest ever to trust God. But, as I have matured and the key word is matured I know he is Faithful to do what he said he would do.
To Brenda, thank you so much for identifying with me instead of attacking me. Your comment,…”but God has always been faithful to me, even when I was unable to see what He was doing or why.”…instantly reminded me of Job. He surely did not know what was going on, either did we. There came the time when he told God “i had heard about You with my ears from long ago, yet now i SEE your Face.” To me this speaks of Job finally realizing the “Bigness” of Who God is. That although the scripture says “The LORD brought all my (Job’s)adversity…” in his “latter days he was blessed more then his beginnings” There was also the time when Job was tired of it all and didnt’ want to answer anymore of the LORD’s questions to which God replied,”I will ask you questions and you WILL answer Me”. Wow!! How many times i, myself had had it with God and the adversity He was allowing in my life. The physical pains, mental and emotional pain…unbelievable! Yet, here we are Brenda, still standing and still believing! Who knows, perhaps our faithfulness will move God to bless our latter days more than our beginnings! Glory to His Name!
Thank you so much for this devotional, Robyn, and to each of you who responded. Trisha, it is a real joy to read how you have come back to trust in the Lord and to give a beautiful testimony about how we are to “5 Trust in the LORD with all [our] heart, And lean not on [our] own understanding; 6 In all [our] ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct [our] paths.” [Proverbs 3:5-6, NKJV] I have often been disappointed with life and others, and frequently in myself; but God has always been faithful to me, even when I was unable to see what He was doing or why. There were times I was angry with God because I thought He had abandoned me, but I have learned through my mistakes that God had never left my side, I had left Him, and I have stopped looking for His hand and started seeking His face. In return, I have been deeply rewarded and know my God will never leave me!
Robyn, when you writers on this site bring up the topic ot “Trust”,you have to know, you’re taking the chance of opening a can of worms! i learned early in life not to trust my own father b/c he violated me for years, i learned not to trust my mother b/c she left with another man and abandoned all us kids. Couldn’t trust men b/c they lied to get what they wanted, cheated with other women or got so drunk they got hit by a 4×4. When it came to God, i trusted HIM to put my marriage back together so i could have the love and family i always wanted…IT DIDN’T HAPPEN! i felt, “see… i can’t even trust God! So when i felt there was absolutely NO ONE to trust, i went down a path of self destruction like never before. After almost being murdered, killed in a car crash and finally arrested…i got some serious help. So glad i was sent to a Christian councelor. He got me back to some normalcy and more importantly, back with the LORD. i WAS able to trust in this councelor. He helped me get sober and eventually opened up a Bible study. For 4 yrs now, i’m sober and in love with the LORD Jesus (i never stopped “loving” HIM, only trusting HIM). The ONLY thing i am able to trust in is my eternal salvaltion and my home in Heaven one day. So to all who might be where i was, you may NEVER understand the “whys” in this life on Earth but there will be rewards in Heaven of which, according to what i’ve lived so far down here, is the ONLY place i’m EVER going to be rewarded for the good i’ve done. ~Blessings
This is a good devotion, but the sheer number of typos in it made it difficult to read and one changed the entire meaning of the sentence.
I agree that many times we approach God with an objective in mind, searching for “confirmation” in the Word that God will give us what we want. The coolest part is that because God is God, He faithfully lets us keep working to get it right. His Word says to trust Him to bring about what is best for us. That is according to Him, not us. That’s the hard part, isn’t it?
Thank you Katie….I like your BMI suggestion, I will discuss with my doc. Again thanks!
Yes…we need to trust Him,God is there when you fully trust.
I think there is a typo here. “Jesus is talking about the fact that we do need to worry because God will take care of our needs.” Seems like an important typo to me so I thought I would point that out. Thanks!
This is a reference to GW. Weight loss is very hard. But please keep in mind that muscle does weigh more than fat. You say you work out 3-4 times a week? That could mean you are now putting on muscle instead of fat. I found, that weighing myself was usually heartbreaking for the same reason. Instead of weighing myself, I would measure my waste, or go by my pant size. The Inches taken off from diet and exersice is more important. Talk to you doctor see if they can to do a BMI test. This way you and your doctor an determine what percentage your body fat is at and if it is in a healthy range. Do not become discouraged. Best of luck to you and everything you do!
I needed this today. I have horrible trust issues. Knowing this I try to turn to God when I know my trust is faultered with, either those I love, or just in life in general. It is sometimes hard to do because Satan brings back things that happened from my past. However, an incident that happened yesterday with the man I am currently seeing is a true test to my trust. I know with my heart I can trust this man. But, do too past issues with past people, it at times is hard to not let my mind tell me things that are not true. This let me sit back for a moment and truly pray, I trust in you Lord. I trust that no matter what comes my way, things may never go the way I want them to but God knows the best path for me and that is where my trust lies. Thank you for posting this today. It has put my heart at ease when it was unsettled since last night.
I’m having a tough time trusting God for weight loss. I finally lost 40 out of the 60 I needed to loose and my health improved; however, I had more to loose and couldn’t. I workout 3-4 times a week eat on a weight watchers plan but jus gout stuck. Now a year later I’m still trying and now I’m gaining. My faith is seriously tested, I’m tied of the disappointments on the scale, and money spent trying to loose. I don’t think God is going to answer this prayer even though its good for my temple.
Just a proof reading comment. The word “not” is left out when you wrote “we do need to worry…” Such a little word omitted certainly makes a difference!
I don’t agree with the comment ‘But one could look at these texts and hope that it means that we will never have trouble because Jesus said not to worry.’ What about the Bible verse where Jesus says ‘in this world you will have trouble but I give you my peace’. John 16:33. We can expect trouble but we can trust God to walk us through that trouble and grow us to become stronger in Him.
