“You are the light of the world.” (Matthew 5:14a)
A three-way light bulb (50/75/125watts) has the capacity to illuminate a room at various levels of brightness depending upon the wattage you choose. Our lives are similar to that of a three-way light bulb. We can burn at the lowest 50-watt level, which will be dim and weak, not making much of a positive impact in other peoples lives. On the other hand, our lives can become brighter while living at the 75-watt setting, which most likely will have a greater positive impact in the lives around us. Then again, we can be blazing at the highest 125-watt setting, which represents the “hearts on fire” level through the energizing works of the Holy Spirit within us.
In order for a three-way light bulb to work, we need to fasten it into a socket and have a trustworthy energy source. More so, we must turn it on in order to receive the light we desire. All this requires action on our part, for without action the light bulb remains off, and our room stays dark.
Similar, we must fasten our hearts and minds in Christ, using the living Word of God as our energy source, and allowing the Holy Spirit to empower us from within so we can be a light to the world around us. The bible says we are to live as children of light consisting in all goodness, righteousness, and truth (Ephesians 5:8-9). However, if we choose not to burn brightly for the Lord then many lost souls will remain in the dark.
As believers and followers of Christ, we ought to be light to the world. In Mathew 5: 14-16 Jesus taught about being Salt and Light, “You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.”
If we are living for Christ, we will undoubtedly glow like stars in the sky. However, our light will become dim if we choose to remain silent when we ought to speak, select wrong paths as in following the crowd, or continue in rebellion and sin that will inevitably dim the light within. Is it time to switch the wattage of light you have been living in? Take action and choose to become more like Christ so God can use you to illuminate other lives. Allow the Holy Spirit to burn brighter than ever before so those sitting in darkness are drawn to the light coming from within you. When was the last time you lit up someone else’s life with God’s love flowing through you?
Heavenly Father,
Forgive us of allowing the light that once was burning brightly for you to become dim. Help us to rid our lives from things that zap your righteous energy and light from us. Let us not dabble in dark areas that we ought not to be in, let us bring all to the light so that we can become shining stars to a world that needs your Light. Amen.

good article and good food for thought too, thank you for this article
thank you and God bless all my sisters in Christ for your awesome encouraging words ! It’s so great to see such support in the body of Christ! Be blessed!
This devotional really is a great reminder that we have something to say about how brightly we are allowing the Holy Spirit to shine through our lives. You are so right Ann, there are so many different opportunities or us to be used by God, to be the hands and feet of Jesus in the lives of others.
Francine, Barbara put it so well when she said that we all go through seasons of life. Sometimes we are in the desert but that doesn’t mean that God isn’t at work. In fact without winter there is no spring in nature and the same is true in our lives. Waiting time is never wasted time so my prayer for you is that you will allow God to be at work even now in this winter season and be assured that He is still there, to will and to do His good pleasure in Your life. I am always so encouraged to know that His promises are true and He has promised to bring to completion the good work that He has begun in us.
Great reminder to believers on how we can be a conduit for the brightest light, the holy spirit in our everyday lives. It could be just being kind and helping a sick neighbor or it could be changing lives of many through social changes and undertakings. God has a plan for each of us and we have to praise him for this opportunity and let him use us every day at the fullest. Much internal rewards will be given …..peace.
Dear Francine, You may feel like a blown out bulb right now BUT you have the gift of the Holy Spirit within you and in time your light will be blazing once again. We all go through seasons of life…spring, summer, winter and fall…times of harvest and times of drought. As written in (Ecclesiastes 3)
Solomon noted there is a time for everything. I pray that you will take a few minutes to read the first several verses of this passage. I know it will bring comfort to you as you acknowledge there is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the sun. May our gracious Lord rise up to meet you in your hour of need my dear sister in Christ. May His joy and Light blaze within you once again. In Jesus name, Amen
Francine, have you asked God to lead you to where he wants you, in living by the spirit we just need to trust where he is leading us, we may even resist and if we do it is likely it is exactly where we are suppose to be, we need just LET GO, LET GOD, LET GOOD AND WALK THROUGH ARE DOUBT AND FEAR…and the gift already is that you are aware…God bless you Francine with peace, love, hope and joy and may harmony raise up and meet you in every encounter, May your light shine brightly,Amen
Oh yes burn, with your hearts desire, as the Holy Spirit leads the way, working through us to help others shine by Gods Grace and Love…AMEN
I feel like a blown out bulb right about now.. I haven’t been to church since June, tried a at home start up church but that wasn’t for us. I’ve been reading, praying, and listening to my Christian music, yet I still feel depleted… I moved to a smaller community and Christian non-denominational churches are far and few between… I know The Lord will move in His time, it’s the waiting that’s hard… It’s tough but I know the best is yet to come! Praise the Lord!
My light is currently shining at the highest setting (125 Watt)…all the glory goes to HIM!
