“The LORD thundered from heaven; the voice of the Most High resounded.” (2 Samuel 22:14)
For over an hour I heard the faintest, distant rolling sound, just a slight reverberation. At first it seemed as though one of our upstairs neighbors might be moving a piece of furniture over carpet—not a disturbing noise, just something a bit out of the ordinary. The sound began to increase, just barely, until I realized I was hearing the onset of thunder. Before long a loud clap proved that a storm was arriving and within moments the rain began pouring down.
Why didn’t I immediately think of this weather change? First, I hadn’t read the day’s forecast. Second, I neglected to look outdoors, and third, I didn’t quickly associate the sound with what thunder usually sounds like in this part of the country.
Similar thinking—or non-thinking—often occurs in my life when challenges or difficulties seem to sneak up on me.
Have I not believed the Apostle Peter’s words: “Dear friends, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal that has come on you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you”? Or perhaps I have been unwilling to look at the reality of life’s circumstances? Maybe I ignored only slightly worrying physical symptoms, family discord or other challenges? Have I not been alert to how those challenges may have their root in my—or others’—walk with God?
The thunder passed, the rain lessened and the sun began to peek again through the clouds. The next time I hear that faint, distant rolling sound, I want it to be a reminder and encouragement to live with eyes wide open to both circumstances and my relationship with God.
Question: How does the weather and nature reflect Christ’s love to you?
