Rationale

Written by Eric Reynolds

Are you feeling ready to walk away from a relationship – are you possibly even considering divorce? We want to pray for you. Please tell us how we can pray.

The LORD detests the way of the wicked, but he loves those who pursue righteousness.” (Proverbs 15:9)

Our rationale for righteousness cannot be grounded in a “moral” replacement for sin. It must be rooted in the reality of a divine standard for holiness.

If we replace binge drinking and getting high with crazed and uncontrolled fun and games that are conducted in the same spirit of carelessness, then we really haven’t done anything moral and might as well get hammered. The same carelessness pervades both activities.

If our reason not to lust is found in the physical performance or appearance of a certain loved one, he or she will inevitably fail to meet the imaginary standard of perfection that we conjure. A spouse cannot be our sole or even primary anchor for faithfulness.

If our reason to attend church and conduct ourselves in a “worthy” or “holy” manner comes from anything outside of the presence of an actual living God, we are a people to be pitied. Without God, the church is an odd and misshapen religious club.

Instead of these cheap replacements, we need a) lasting, b) functional, c) satisfying faith.

It will last if it’s founded in eternal truths, one’s that reach back to the beginning of time.

It will function if it’s inspired by a divine mind, a living, intelligent Being.

It will satisfy if created by a God who is both personal and good.

Any alternative to Jesus Christ will crumble, and has crumbled, time and time again.

Prayer: Father, would you fill my life with a lasting, functional, satisfying faith? Forgive me for using cheap and moral replacements for sin. I wish to only live by Your righteousness. Amen.

Question: Have you been using moral replacements for sin? If you ask, God is ready to start you off with a clean slate today!
