The Importance of the Holy Spirit

Stop holding your breath – learn how to breathe spiritually.

“But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.” (John 16:7)

Have you ever wondered why Christ only lived on earth forty days after his resurrection? He could have stayed on this earth for months or even years. He could have stayed until God’s eternal plan was complete. Imagine how great the world might be today if Jesus had stayed on the earth for the past two thousand years. Why didn’t he stay?

Jesus passionately describes to his disciples that it is essential that He goes so He can send the Holy Spirit into our hearts. Until recently I have never understood this verse at all. Why is it so important for the Holy Spirit to come into our hearts?

The Holy Spirit is not only important but essential to life. In fact the coming of the Holy Spirit was equally important as coming of Jesus Christ! Jesus Christ saves us from our past life but the Holy Spirit empowers us to live the life God has created us for. Without the Holy Spirit our lives are stuck in neutral and going nowhere. We desperately need the empowerment of the Spirit to grow and mature in our spiritual walk.

The Holy Spirit is the person of the Godhead who furnishes our lives with our inheritance as children of God. Through Christ we have become children of God. But through the Holy Spirit abiding in our hearts we practically receive and live in our inheritance as children of God.

The Holy Spirit is the most active and prevalent person of the Godhead in our day-to-day lives. The Gospels depict the life and ministry of Jesus in the earth.  While Jesus walked the earth he was confined by his physical body and could only minister to a limited number of people at one time. This is why Jesus knew it was essential for Him to leave the earth so He could send the person of the Holy Spirit to minister to every believer on the earth at the same time. What an incredible plan! We cannot even begin to fully comprehend it.

After Jesus departs the remainder of the New Testament depicts the ministry of the Holy Spirit. And what an incredible ministry it is. With the Godhead dwelling in the heart of every believer through the person of the Holy Spirit now every Christian is capable of doing everything Jesus did on this earth and even greater things!

If we could hear God speak, He might say something like this, “My child I saved you for so much more. I have such incredible plans for you beyond your wildest dreams. I want to shower you with my love and show you great and marvellous things. All this has been available since the very moment you accepted Christ. This very moment I am waiting to show you with unlimited and immeasurable divine empowerment if only you will invite my Spirit into your life.”

God in Heaven, Thank you for sending Your Holy Spirit to live in me today. I pray that I would walk close to You, listening to Your voice so that that Spirit can produce good fruit in my life today.  Amen

Question: What role does the Holy Spirit play in your life?

  • Among the trinity, HolySpirit is the one on the chair presently. a christian without the HolySpirit is like a man without a breath in him…without the deal consultation with the HolySpirit we will be running life at a risk. I so much love this write up. God bless you sir.

  • Thank you for your encouragement. I really like your analogy Leroy that is so so good!!

Amen K I long for a greater outpouring of the Holy Spirit in my life too. Its the only way we can fulfill God’s plan for our lives and His eternal kingdom plan in this earth.

Tragically, I think you are right, if Jesus was our world today much of religion might even fight against Him as you have so accurately identified. I think this is a really really important point you made here K. We need to have moldable hearts that are always searching for truth and always searching for Christ. We need to be willing to let go of all preconceived ideas and allow the Holy Spirit reveal Himself in a greater way than ever before.

I just finished chapter summaries on the book of John and realizing like never before the importance of the Spirit. Please feel free to read them for yourself if you are interested:

I will say this prayer often. I appreciate the explanation. I welcome the Holy Spirit and I pray for the grace to do His will. I wish to imitate Jesus.

I never thought of what it would be like if Jesus had stayed on earth. Would our society even recognize him? They would persecute Him most likely.

Thank you for this article, this witness.

Having the baptism of the Holy Spirit for us Christians is like a cop having his badge, gun and uniform to be identified who he represents. We have the fruits of the Spirit , love , kindness, mercy… and so on. If someone claims to be a born-again Christian, but has no fruits to show that the Spirit of Jesus lives in him or her they are a lie and only deceive them selves. So be-careful with those people. God bless you all brothers and sisters and stay in prayer, Gods speed!
Ephesains 1:13-14 (13)And you also were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit,(14)who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession–to the praise of his glory.
