“Devote yourself to prayer, being watchful and thankful.” Colossians 4:2
I have a friend who ran a 5K, a 10K, a half marathon, a marathon, and an ultra-marathon – all in one week!
“I like to run but I’m not devoted to it,” he told me. “When I run, I pray about the things that I see happening around me.”
He is obviously good at running. However, even though he gives a lot of time to train for it, running is neither his highest priority nor his greatest passion. His focus is on his relationship with God. He is totally devoted to discovering what God is doing in his life. He prays with a watchful and thankful mindset: for the people he sees, the home his family lives in, and for the business that he works for.
We fill our days with many things: talking, eating, working… all of which are good things!
Imagine taking the things we already like to do and transforming it to a time of doing something that we love to do. Take after my friend’s example. He took one of his favorite activities – running – and turned it into a time where he entered into a great conversation with God! How could this shift in mindset affect your day?
Father, thank You for the gift of time. Thank You for the 24 hours that You give me each day. Thank You for everything that You have blessed me with. Help me to be more aware of You. As I go by my day today, help me to be more watchful about the many blessings that You bring. Please help me to embrace an attitude of gratefulness. May You be glorified in everything that I say and do. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Pick one daily activity that you spend a lot of time on. Maybe you live an hour away from work and have a lengthy commute. Maybe you spend a lot of time in the kitchen getting your family meal ready. Pick one hour where you pray in the moment about everything that you are experiencing. Adopt an attitude of watchfulness and gratitude. See how this practice changes your experience – over time, you might just become devoted to this!
