Happy Holidays

Christmas morning came early when three small children roamed our house. They are teenagers now, so we’re happy if they wake up before lunch. When they were little they pounced on me at 4 a.m., jarring me from slumber. “Let’s open the gifts,” they’d holler. Hey,” I’d say, trying to remember where I was, “It’s [...] Read More >

I Can’t Love Without You

“Hollywood Stars Falling Out of Love.” The bold headline jumps out at me from a tabloid known worldwide for its careful attention to truth, accuracy, integrity and particularly freedom of speech. Below is a celebrity couple in happier days. The caption reads: “…We just don’t love each other anymore.” At the top of the page [...] Read More >

I Hate Witnessing

Thanks in part to our great uncle Air Miles, our family of five was privileged to spend a week in Mexico, suffering in the sand and pounding the streets of Mazatlan looking for cheap t-shirts. We sampled the local cuisine and interacted with street people—many of them without limbs, most of them without hope. On [...] Read More >

Late for Christmas

It’s hard to believe another year has come and gone. Time waits for no man, and very few women, my father used to say. Like the New Year, the wise men came after Christmas. They’re not really part of the nativity set. Scholars believe the magi were Gentiles who had come from the east and [...] Read More >

Of Bumper Cars and Harpoons

I’ve been hanging out in nursing homes a little earlier than I planned, now that Mom finds herself a permanent resident in this one-story unit a mile from our house. Here most of the inmates are aging gracefully. Others are determined to seek vengeance by using their wheelchairs as bumper cars and their canes as [...] Read More >

Sharks ahoy!

Ever since he was knee high to a Doberman the boy was fearless. Take him to the ocean and he’d jump in looking for sharks. Take him to the mountains and he’d see how high he could climb. One day when he was 5, I watched in horror as he jumped off a roof—a garbage [...] Read More >

Squeeze the Day

Two major events took place during the week this book was due. First of all, I turned 40. Don’t worry, I am not having a midlife crisis yet. I will wait to finish this chapter before I dye my hair. Several birthday cards arrived from friends who were trying to be helpful, I’m sure. One contained [...] Read More >

The Age of Enlightenment

I was in fourth grade when I first heard about sex. For all I know, it may not have existed before that point in history (October 16, 1969, a Wednesday, I believe). In a rather  memorable moment, a neighbor boy whom we shall call Bobby (because that is his name), told me all about it. [...] Read More >
