The Delta region of Myanmar still struggles after the devastation of Cyclone Nargis on May 3, 2008. After months of evaluation and construction plans, there is a glimmer of hope in Myanmar.

Her dress soaked from the rain and her face wet with tears, the school headmaster pled with GAiN to come with her to see just one more school. Dark was settling on the devasted landscape of the Delta region in Myanmar– the hardest hit area by Cyclone Nargis on May 3rd. Prepared to retreat after a long day of visiting school construction sites along the river system, the GAiN team relented and followed her to the last school despite intensifying monsoon rains. Lining the badly flooded path to the school were sand bags that students had spent hours filling with burnt rice husks in an effort to make GAiN’s journey easier. At the school, GAiN discovered that the teachers had prepared a meal and hot tea for them at the end of their journey. GAiN gathered the teachers together and prayed for them. The headmaster’s eyes welled up with tears again.

“In this region there are no churches and no Christians,” says a GAiN representative who was on site. “We can sense the people of the Delta are very touched by GAiN’s reconstruction and relief work. God’s love is breaking in.”

After months of evaluation and construction plans, there is a glimmer of hope in Myanmar. The Myanmar Relief Project is a united effort between Global Aid Network Canada, USA, Germany, Holland and Australia. GAiN Australia – the lead agency in the effort – is in the unique position as the only relief agency to have permission from the Myanmar Government to work in the Delta and Pyapon areas.

On August 5th, the first of six schools to be built was officially handed over to the Myanmar Ministry of Education. Many children still study in makeshift classrooms and use their seats as desks, waiting in excited anticipation for their new school. Despite the challenges of the monsoon and the remote locations of the construction sites, GAiN is progressing extremely quickly with the school contruction project. Two schools have already been completed and another three are near completion.

GAiN was also able to initiate the first phase of the Back Pack Project, which will provide every child with a quality backpack, stationary, books, Christian literature and many other essential school items.
The school construction project and other efforts outlined below are all in addition to the initial response to the Myanmar disaster that began in May. In the months following, GAiN has delivered seven containers filled with food and emergency supplies to Myanmar as well as six truckloads entering the country from Thailand. Another eight containers are currently on their way and 14 more are being prepared for shipment as relief efforts continue.

More Myanmar Relief Highlights:
Housing Project
The residential areas flattened by Cyclone Nargis on the outskirts of Yangon are now housing reconstruction sites. 120 new homes will be built in the six villages outside of the city. Over the next two to three years, GAiN will help to rebuild the infrastructure of entire villages and implement systems to enable them to be self-supporting once again.

Food Distribution
Many hundreds of kilograms of rice have been distributed in the six villages outside of Yangon.

Water Purification
Over 100 partnering church volunteers in Myanmar have been trained to set up water purification units. Seven purification units have been set up in 7 different villages in Bogalay, Hmaw Be and Shwe Pyi Tha Townships. Using gravel and sand for the filtering system, each unit can provide clean water to the entire village without ongoing costs.

Aid for Prisoners
GAiN had the unique privilege of donating 50 hospital beds to the Yangon Insein Prison in early August, home to some 6800 inmates.

Community Health Centers
Construction of community health centers will begin shortly throughout the Delta region.

Training Volunteers
Partnering with Myanmar nationals, GAiN is providing trauma counseling training to local volunteers, enabling them to provide ongoing relational support, encouragement and care to those who have suffered and lost so much throughout this ordeal.

Thank you for your support and prayers for Myanmar. Your partnership in the Myanmar Relief Project has already made a real difference; children are able to go to school, families have new homes, communities have clean water, and a nation now has hope.

If you would like to continue your partnership with GAiN in this crucial work, please contact us at 1.888.826.3506 or give online.

Power to Change was recently chosen as a Best Christian Places to Work in Canada finalist for 2008. Organizations are recognized based on a benchmark of excellence; in order to qualify, organizations must score an average of 4.0 out of 5.0 or higher on the Best Christian Workplaces Survey. Employees are asked to rank their employer in categories such as job satisfaction, organizational commitment, Christian witness, supervisory effectiveness, work satisfaction, personal growth and development, management effectiveness, customer/supporter satisfaction, teamwork, communications, pay and benefits.

According to the survey, people love to work for the Best Christian Workplaces in Canada for two reasons: the cause and the culture. One staff member says, “ I get to use my skills, what God has gifted me with, to reach the world with Christ’s love. It’s an honour to work with so many passionate people.”

July 2008

Months after Cyclone Nargis tore through Myanmar, there are still villages that have not received the critical aid they need to sustain themselves. As victims of this latest catastrophe to hit Southeast Asia continue to suffer and die everyday, the UN reports that many relief organizations are still experiencing long delays in the visa application process. As a result, many donors in the western world have started to shift their giving to other causes in other countries, leaving the poor victims of this catastrophe to fend for themselves in the wake of their own government’s bureaucracy and corruption…

…But not you. Thanks be to God for you and others like you who have not abandoned the people of Myanmar in their time of most desperate need. Your gifts and prayers continue to make a real difference through the work of the Global Aid Network (GAiN), one of the few relief agencies that has been successful in pushing through government red tape to provide immediate disaster relief to some of Myanmar’s worst-hit areas.

On a recent trip to the Delta area, the worst affected region of Myanmar, Daniel Win, the CEO of GAiN Australia and project leader for the Myanmar Relief Project, reported that the situation there is almost unbearable: “The smell is overpowering. Many corpses lay rotting and unattended. Victims camp along the highway hoping that benevolent locals will throw food and aid out of their car windows. The Junta has set up relief camps, but they aren’t able to deal with the overwhelming number of people affected, so many are turned away. It is a desperate scene.”

As a Burmese expatriate who at one time held senior government positions within the former Burma (now Myanmar), Daniel found early favour with the current Myanmar government. His background and unique cultural knowledge enabled GAiN to quickly establish agreements to stabilize six regional villages in the Delta area. Work has now commenced on this regional plan thanks to your faithfulness and generosity. A 10-person logistics team has been established in Yangon, including a field operations manager who is currently overseeing the purchase and transportation of building materials and goods to the Delta region. These efforts will help an area covering approximately one quarter of the devastated region and help more than 30,000 people!

GAiN is also pleased to announce that the Myanmar government has recently granted them consignee status. This means that GAiN is able to distribute its own goods in-country, bypassing the usual government bureaucracy which inevitably stalls relief supplies from getting into the hands of those that need them. This is a major breakthrough and cause for celebration! Ten containers have already been shipped and distributed, with another six containers due to arrive in the coming weeks. Thanks to God’s favour, your gifts and GAiN’s strategic alliances, the victims of Cyclone Nargis will continue to receive the aid they need in a timely manner.

The Delta region of Myanmar has begun the long slow climb back from the brink of destruction, but much more will need to be done in the coming months and years in order to restore this area and its people back to full health. Your partnership has already made a real difference in the lives of real people, but thousands more continue to suffer without help, praying for someone to ease their pain. As you enjoy the fruits of your faithfulness and generosity today, perhaps you will consider continuing your partnership with GAiN and the Myanmar Relief Project. You are the miracle that they are praying for. Thank you for responding in love.

Friday, May 8, 2008

The following is the latest information Power to Change has received from our humanitarian partner, GAiN. Daniel Win, CEO of GAiN Australia, who is originally from Myanmar and has many close connections there, is landing in Bangkok today to begin directing relief efforts. Here is what he says:

Over 100,000 have died. Over 1.2 million homeless. Yet things are set to get even worse as the problems escalate. The already contaminated water supply is being further threatened as bodies are being dumped into the rivers. Thousands of children have suddenly become orphans. People are confused, afraid and hurting. Communication is down. Transportation is difficult. Disease is starting to spread in epidemic proportions. The real crisis has just begun. It is critical that help is provided immediately before the disaster spreads in exponential proportions.

GAiN has responded immediately by setting up headquarters operations in Bangkok. Our local representatives have already travelled into Myanmar, obtained first hand field assessments and reliable reports. Directors from the GAiN nations are already to help; staff have been assigned and a strategy will be implemented within the next few days.

We are utilizing our extensive pre-existing network of contacts in Myanmar, and will be empowering local and reliable leaders to immediately provide emergency relief to those areas needed most. Our approach is to resource and empower local churches to help the suffering people in their own country and community. They need our help in order to help others.

Even before containers and shipments of relief from abroad can arrive, goods and resources will be purchased locally and distribution will take place immediately.

In general, 20 teams of 2 have already started targeting five disaster areas, and more financial assistance is required to further equip them with funds and emergency relief goods. Rebuilding of houses and temporary shelters has already begun at approximately $100 per household. Planning is underway to send volunteer medical teams in the weeks ahead.

The estimated cost to provide immediate emergency aid, which includes a two week supply of food, blankets and a set of clothing is $100 for a family of five.

As with any emergency relief project, it is crucial to have financial support as soon as possible in order to deliver the much needed material relief to families in Myanmar.

Current Realities in Israel

Ongoing conflict in the Middle East has damaged infrastructure and hindered trade, transportation and economic growth. During these uncertain times, new immigrants and returning Jewish people continue to arrive in Israel: adding to the number of people trying to set up new homes, find jobs, and raise their families. In addition, many Israelis, especially those of Arabic decent, have been negatively impacted.

Many people, including 30% of holocaust survivors, are unable to provide for even their basic needs of life. In fact, 1.3 million Israelis live under the poverty line. Currently Power to Change strategic humanitarian aid project seeks to help those directly affected by conflict, and make a lasting positive impact in Israel, physically and spiritually.

Doubling our Impact

We, along with like-minded partners will now ship 4 containers (up from 2 a month) full of medical supplies, blankets, diapers, clothing and other essential supplies every month. By increasing our operation to 4 containers each month we double our impact and reach an estimated 120,000 poverty-stricken people each year. Typically over $84,000 worth of supplies are donated to fill each container and the contents are distributed through Evangelical Jewish congregations to those most in need. These supplies are not only meeting basic needs of life but they also are used as a tool for these local churches to build relationships and share the message of the Messiah.

Financial Needs

We are trusting God to meet our financial needs as we step out in faith. I urge you to pray and consider how you can help bring the truth of Christ to the Israeli people. Your gift of $100, $200, $500, or whatever you are led to give provides the funds needed to ship 4 containers each month. Each container costs $8,400 to ship but the value of the contents is $84,000! Praise God for enough donated gifts to fill the container!

Power to Change is in Sudan. We continue to introduce the love of Jesus Christ to a broken people. We also bring the people of Sudan food to tame their hunger, clean water to quench their thirst and counseling to heal their emotional pain, but it is through the Bread of Life that we will see the most radical transformations.

The JESUS film is a dynamic video presentation that tells the story of the life of Christ. Each time we reach out to a community with this video, Jesus is invited into the hearts of many of those people – sometimes existing churches are enriched by the message and other times new churches are planted.

It’s a miraculous event!

Please partner with us financially as we seek to share Jesus with the Sudanese people. To learn more or give a gift, click the bottons below.

Introducing our new name: Power to Change. Our desire is to take people everywhere on a faith adventure.

Our desire at Campus Crusade for Christ, Canada is to take people on a faith adventure where they will discover Jesus, experience the Holy Spirit and inspire others to do the same. To position ourselves to reach this culture in this generation is it time to change our name. With much thought and constant prayer we have adopted a new name: Power to Change.

Does this mean we’re changing what we’re all about? Not at all. Our passion for the Great Commission and desire to help you reach your world with the Gospel remains as strong as ever. Our hope is that our new name will allow us to work even closer together as we share with the world that Jesus is the Power to Change.

“We want to invite Christians into a deeper faith adventure and give them the tools and training to reach others.”

Talking about the new name, President Leonard Buhler said, “I’m really excited about our new name. It captures the heart and soul of our organization and clearly communicates our key message: that Jesus Christ is the power to change.”

The name Power to Change begs a question. For a spiritual seeker it offers an opportunity for us to share the Gospel. For believers, the logo of the cross over the globe represents what Jesus has done to transform our own lives and the deep desire we have to see the world discover a relationship with Him.

A bold new vision

Is it possible that the entire world can come to know the message of Jesus Christ? Absolutely. But the task is too big for any one organization. That’s why Power to Change wants to help you reach your world.

We’re not asking you to come join us; we’re inviting you to use us. We want to make training in evangelism and follow-up more accessible and equip people to reach out to their communities. We want to see entire cities impacted by the Gospel from Calgary to Bangkok. Our vision is to see 500 cities reached for Christ by 2020. It’s going to be spectacular to watch God at work.

Experience. Discover. Inspire. Come and begin a faith adventure.
