I was brought up within the Church. It was very strong in my family. My parents used to bring us to the local chapel every Sunday. That early foundation was really important because when I had lost my way in later life, I knew who to turn to.
Famous but empty
A few years later, I became part of the famous Clannad band. People thought that my haunting, angel-like voice made me happy in life and that is how I made it seem when I was on stage. But inside, I was empty.
Inside, I was missing so much! I was famous, but I was so lonely. I was traveling all over the world and performing to packed audiences but I was so far from home and was all by myself. For a while alcohol and drugs were a part of my life.
My singing gave expression to a deep sense of yearning, of wanting something. I wanted a friendship and someone to lean on.
A different life
I turned to the God I had been brought up with. I asked God to forgive my past sins and give me inner peace. And God answered me.
Coming to know Him in a personal way was a very gradual thing for me. I once felt that I couldn’t call myself a Christian when I heard others’ dramatic testimonies about coming to know God. But I am growing strong with the knowledge that God is with me. I am building up my relationship with Him.
My life is so different now that I know Jesus. I am so happy. I feel so blessed. I can manage anything. When God is in your life, nothing is impossible. Having a relationship with Him is amazing. I get up in the morning and I know that I am not alone.
I try to involve Him in everything I do. It can be lonely being on the road and living out of a suitcase. But with God, I can handle anything! As I wrote in one of my songs, there is a banner of hope when you come to know Jesus and begin to follow His word. You find hope when God becomes your God and gently calls you into a new way.
Take a look at your life. How would you describe it? Contented? Rushed? Exciting? Stressful? Moving forward? Holding back? For many of us it’s all of the above at times. There are things we dream of doing one day, there are things we wish we could forget. In the Bible, it says that Jesus came to make all things new. What would your life look like if you could start over with a clean slate?
Living with hope
If you are looking for peace, there is a way to balance your life. No one can be perfect, or have a perfect life. But every one of us has the opportunity to experience perfect grace through a personal relationship with God through His Son, Jesus Christ.
You can receive Christ right now by faith through prayer. Praying is simply talking to God. God knows your heart and is not so concerned with your words as He is with the attitude of your heart. Here’s a suggested prayer:
Lord Jesus, I want to know you personally. Thank you for dying on the cross for my sins. I open the door of my life to you and ask you to come in as my Savior and Lord. Take control of my life. Thank you for forgiving my sins and giving me eternal life. Make me the kind of person you want me to be.
Does this prayer express the desire of your heart? You can pray it right now, and Jesus Christ will come into your life, just as He promised.
Is this the life for you?
If you invited Christ into your life, thank God often that He is in your life, that He will never leave you and that you have eternal life. As you learn more about your relationship with God, and how much He loves you, you’ll experience life to the fullest.
