Chynna Phillips

Profile on: Chynna Phillips  of the Wilson Phillips musical group

faith_chynaAs the daughter of one of rock music’s first “power couples” (John and Michelle Phillips of The Mamas and the Papas ), Chynna Phillips grew up in a show business world apart from faith and God.

In the early 1990’s, she teamed with sisters Carnie and Wendy Wilson (daughters of Beach Boys legend Brian Wilson) to form Wilson Phillips. The collaboration produced one of the most successful albums of the new decade, with three #1 singles and worldwide sales of over 10 million. They were nominated for 3 Grammy Awards, and for a time were considered one of the hottest groups in music.

A follow-up album was less successful, and within three years the group disbanded. Chynna briefly pursued a solo career and got married (to Baldwin brother Billy), all the while searching for true fulfillment in her life.

It just didn’t seem fair,” she says. “I was searching for God for so long.”

She began to notice the changes in her brother-in-law Stephen Baldwin, whom she had known from his days as one of Hollywood’s genuine free spirits. When Stephen told her that he had given his life to Christ, she laughed.

“I had a deluded image of what it meant to be a Christian,” she says. “I thought you had to be perfect, and it’s the exact opposite.”

Though first skeptical of the positive changes in Stephen and his wife Kennya, she began to inquire about their new relationship with Jesus Christ.

I’ve always felt a tug on my heart towards Jesus…always. Even as a little girl. But I felt I could never live up to what Jesus would expect of me. (When I saw what He had done in Stephen’s life), it came back to that tug I had felt for so many years.”

She committed her life to Christ in 2003. As she moves forward in her new walk, Chynna is trusting God to shape her life.

Jesus just wants me to allow myself to be carved into His image,” she says.

“The more I do, the more I realize that I become more of myself…more of whom I authentically, truly am.”

“The more I surrender my life to Jesus, the more I actually become Chynna.”

Have you ever felt like you’re looking for meaning in all the wrong place? Are you circling round and round but still not finding happiness? Perhaps it’s time you asked Jesus to help you take stock of your life before a crisis hits. If you don’t know Jesus, we encourage you to pray the following:

Lord Jesus, I want to know you personally. Thank you dying on the cross for my sins. I open the door of my life and receive You as my Savior and Lord. Thank you for forgiving my sins and giving me eternal life. Take control of my life. Make me be the person you want me to be.

Chynna thank you for sharing. To hear your testimony and the impact that Billy and his wife had by being Christ honoring examples, is truly beautiful. May God’s great riches abound in abundant mercy as you continue to walk the walk. Undeservingly His, S. Patterson

Just goes to show that “born again christianity” is more like a contagion than a transformation. Billy Baldwin and his lovely with Kenyya are the lowest of the low. Typical of this type of person they raise all the hell they can while they’re young until the well runs dry. Then they’re onto the next phase scam. No wonder Chynna was confused about what a Christian life required… because the rules shift and change to favor the person deluding themselves. I’m sure Chynna is thinking.. “WOW.. I didn’t know you could do THAT and still come around here calling yourself a Christian… take THAT many drugs.. destroy that much stuff… raise THAT much hell?” and then when you no longer have the energy for that.. you take on this new persona where you’ll raise hell a different way… point fingers at everyone else ’cause they don’t know “the walk” . I’ve got a relative who for the past ten years drives me BATS**** crazy. Comes over for thanksgiving.. and God forbid that TV comes on and heavens to betsy the news shows a local church, charity group, volunteer org or soup kitchen feeding the hungry, elderly or homeless. You’d think infants were being clubbed over the head… “oh those are WORKS not the WORD… these people don’t understand what HE meant by feeding the hungry in HIM with HIS …” I can’t even stand it. I don’t want to blow up the table for goodness sake but I’m so tempted to ask him.. “and what are YOU doing for the hungry and poor this year? Or do you have that SPECIAL annotated Bible edition with the old testament/new testament and two NEW books written by Ayn Rand and Milton Friedman?” Well good luck to the Baldwins.. definitely a Long Island crew… but I have to say it is sad to see people who are aimless and spiritually immature float around for a few decades and fall into the same born again trap that’s been around for decades. It’s no different from McDonald’s hamburgers in spiritual form. Culturally locked into American execeptionalism as surely as voodoo or santeria reflects the mix of cultures in South America. Horatio Alger meets ancient semite texts. Oh well… no great loss.. I wish Chynna good luck with Chynna and Vaughn and hope that Wendy & Carnie Wilson hook up with Cass’s daughter and give that original vision another try.

I’m glad that Phillips has found some comfort in her born again Christianity, but her claims that she would never find fulfillment in her career, etc. fall a little flat given that she *only* found God after failing to revive her long moribund career. She seemed to find a fair amount of fulfillment when she was doing well.

For all naysayers, it is easy to judge another, yet we are commanded not to do that. Only God can truly judge another, and He looks on the heart, not on outward appearances. I am so happy that Chynna has found peace in Christ. Nothing that the world can give will fill the place that waits for a relationship with the Creator of the universe. That’s real security.

I Facebooked this article to share with my friends. A Christian artist is not an oxymoron.

  • Brad says:

I was pleased to find out about Chynna’s belief. I’m not a groupie or fan, I happened along this site via a news article but I have heard of some of her tunes. Chynna if you are out there, I hope you make a difference in the world. To those reading… it is not a matter of solely finding “comfort”, it is not a matter of finding “oneself”, it is not a matter of finding “peace”, it is a matter of finding the one who created you, and understanding our myopic tendencies of viewing life within all we can physically see, hear and touch. In that process, yes we will find peace, ourselves, and etc. but the motive is important. If the skeptics were more secure and courageous in finding more in and about life than just themselves, a look at the overwhelming number of prophetic events fulfilled in Christ might turn their head some. I do not mean that as a chest poker but something indeed to consider… you might be surprised. It is not about whether we’re perfect, have been perfect or going to be perfect, it is about what is truth for us when we get to the end of our lives and mankind. Unfortunately, as mentioned by one skeptic here, he has a point. There are believers who conduct themselves a bit over bearing, or believers who miss the mark, screw up royally or worse those committing unspeakable crimes as in the Elizabeth Smart case and religion was the shield for her perpetrators vile acts. However Christ died for even those who have committed such and it is everyone’s choice to choose or not choose Christ. The gift of freewill and how else should it be… who wants to “make” someone love and follow them, as it is not love but dictatorship and there is no satisfaction in that. I will say as well that we all are in various stages of living according to God’s Word and we are merely a snapshot of what we were, what we are, and what we will be, depending on when that snapshot is taken. No different than anything else in life. The greatest athlete if looked at by a scout when they were 10 would have hardly shown the potential he or she had as a young adult with years of work and practice. It is amazing to me that because we are believers that aspect is not afforded us by critics and instead we are expected to be perfect role models the minute we believe. As I say, a bit myopic and immature if I might add as well… I will expect then everyone to glean and A plus score by merely picking up a math book and touting they’ve signed up for the class.

The fulfillment of our lives is LOVE as it like it said Love one another as I have loved you says the Lord God if we apply this in real life we easily understand word of God in our lives, to understand other people around you, learn to love them as what they are or what status they lives will be.with the word of God we learn to focus our way in meaningful life for we have one life to live, in every of our steps we learn to think twice even the delibaration of our word to others we think before we say it, so we cannot hurt to others in every word of God; He teach us to control ourselves in times of trials comes in our way we must be humble and patient and always have positive thinking for the word of wisdom is in you,for Gods love and understanding is our strenght and stand firm more on our faith to Him

as it like it said 1 Cor 10:13
No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. and God is faithful; He will not let you tempted beyond what you can bear. but when you are tempted, He will also provide a way so that you can stand under it. as it like it said others may forget you but not shall I. even in your old age and gray hairs I am he, I am he who will sustain you, I made you and carry you and I will rescue you says the Lord God Isaiah 46:4 for your name was in Gods hand even detailed of your life.God is with us always, He never leave us or forsake, God never say “NO” but with His word you may understand How He guide you in all your way; for sometime He gave us trials to have lesson to rememeber as it like it said Heb 12:5-6 and you have forgotten the word of encouragement that address you as son “my son do not make light of the Lord discipline and do not lose heart when He rebukes you because the Lord discipline those He loves, and He punishes everyone to accept as a son for this you know God loves you so much. He just want us to realized something wrong or to remember that God never forget you.give all your worries for Lord God is lowly and humble in heart and learn from Him and you will find the rest of your soul.always pray to God talk to him privately, meditates His word
and see the next thing. May the Lord God bless your Family with love and happiness in life God bless Ms. Chynna Phillips

Dyspeptic Skeptic: You sound like you have a lot of anger, and I can certainly understand how your relative annoys you.
But, you wrote about Stephen Baldwin (not Billy, that’s Chynna’s husband): “Typical of this type of person they raise all the hell they can while they’re young until the well runs dry. Then they’re onto the next phase scam.” How are you able to judge whether another person’s faith is authentic or “the next phase scam”? People can and do change. Would you prefer that each of us continues to do wrong and stay where we are? Regardless of whether you feel a person is worthy of redemption, God loves us so much that he shows us mercy and gives us a 2nd chance to have a relationship with him. And that opportunity is available to you too.

  • Annie says:

Hey good for you, Chynna! So glad Jesus is concerning himself with you and the other Baldwins; as well as fine tuning your career! Too bad he forgets all about the people in the Sudan, Africa, and other world countries where something as simple as food would be nice. But, I guess he’s too busy honing your career and amassing your wealth back to what it was!

Deluded? Yes. You’ve created Jesus in YOUR image. Good for you and brother in law, Stephen. How does that saying go….oh yes! “There’s a sucker born-again every minute!”

  • Steve Koraly says:

Chynna if you ever read this… Hi again… I flew you and Billy back from your honeymoon/Athens-JFK. (You came up to the cockpit because you were apprehensive about flying.) Saw you on TV re. your Christmas album and ended up here.

It takes some courage these days to admit being a Christian because the attacks are inevitable. e.g. The skeptics on this site that nastily blast you and Stephen and will tolerate almost anything but revile Christians if they are less than perfect, (ALL OF US).

To them, to you, to all of us… ignorance of God is pandemic because too few bother to read His “Owner’s manual”… an anthology of 66 books, written on 3 continents in 3 different languages over a period of 1,600 years. The “Owners manual” is ignored and we do damage to the “equipment,” (ourselves), and each other. The Harvard Law Professor, Simon Greenleaf, was an expert in evidence. He was challenged to examine the evidence of Christ… he became a Christian. The evidence is overwhelming if you will take the time to study it. Give yourself a Christmas present. Read John… study it… obtain eternity in heaven and God throws in an abundant life now, (regardless of your circumstances.)

    Merry Christmas to all.

  • I have just finished McKenzie’s book. In it, I read that you have become a Christian. Now I know it is true. I am so happy for you! You have found the true, good, and loving Father of us all. And you are in “our” family. God bless you and those who unashamedly lived their faith in front of you. I am praying for McKenzie also to come to know her real Father. To be carved into His image, and as you so rightly stated, to become more of whom she authentically, truly is. See you are the Table!

“When Jesus heard this, he said to him, “You still lack one thing. Sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”

  • Camille Ahrman says:

We all do “crazy” and “wild” things, trying to fill that void. Some of those things may actually assuage us for a time. Worldly fame, money, etc. But the void is still there…and when we continue to run into dead ends, we search for more. And that ‘more’ is a relationship with the God of the universe, through His Son, Jesus Christ. It is not a cop-out. It is the Truth.

  • Jamie Jamie says:

I am interested to know why you quoted that Bible verse Donna.

  • pappa mamma says:

Bad news…600 years after Buddhism came to light, faith comes to the Middle East…Jesus probably just a man of his times using or adapting the story he heard about what had happened in India.

  • Jamie Jamie says:

That’s interesting Pappa Mamma, what similarities do you see between the life of Jesus and the life of Siddhartha Gautama Buddha?

  • Camille says:

The big difference, Pappa Mamma, is that Jesus Christ was crucified, dead, and buried. He arose from the grave and is still alive today. His tomb is empty…

  • Steve Koraly says:

Mamma Pappa; Isaiah prophesied Jesus’ coming 150 years BEFORE Siddhartha’s birth. “For onto us a child is born, onto us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, the mighty God the everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace.” Isaiah 9:6. Google “351 Prophecies Fulfilled in Jesus Christ” if you want to know the truth rather than make wild speculations of Jesus Copying Siddhartha. The Jews were Very Monotheistic but this verse says a child will be born and called,”the mighty God the everlasting Father” THINK about it! Youtube Handel’s Messiah and enjoy this set to music. Peace.

  • Sharon says:

interesting article cool about the daughter believing in God you don’t read anything about this daugher

  • Annie says:

    Steve Koraly,

None of what you stated in a previous post is remotely true. But regarding your most recent post to mamma pappa; remember that the Old Testament also said that the messiah’s name was to be Emmanuel. But it wasn’t, was it? In the New Testament, we see this error – he was called Jesus. One time in Matthew (which was written fourth, NOT FIRST) he was finally referred to as Emmanuel. Perhaps the Jews of that day noticed the error a bit too late. Yeah. Looks like it.

  • Sharon says:

interesting comments thank you to all who shared

  • Jamie Jamie says:

Hi Annie, the significance of names in the ancient world had much more to do about a person’s character than they do today. The name Jesus (or more accurately Yeshua because that would have been what He was called in Aramaic, the language commonly used by the Jews at that time and is translated into the Greek texts of the New Testament as Yesous which was then translated to the Latin Yesus and then to our English Jesus) meant “to rescue”. That’s why Joseph was told, “Call Him Jesus for He will save His people from their sins.” (Matthew 1:11) In the same way that Jesus revealed something about His character, Immanuel equally revealed to us something about Him. Immanuel means “God with us”. While it was not His common name, it still was a reflection of who He is. In many ways Jesus again and again told people that He was God. When one of His followers asked to see God Jesus said, “If you have seen me you have seen God the Father.” (John 14:9)

  • Annie says:

    Hi Jamie!

So what? All you’ve shown is how many times a book has been rewritten by a lot of different people. And you’re right. It has. What makes you think any of is true? Because your mom and dad said so? Because you were born in the Western World? Because I promise you – if you had been born in the Middle East, you’d be bowing to Allah and explaining the Hadiths by the prophet Mohammed. Funny how geographical Jesus, (Yeshuah, Joshua – or just whatever his name was) – truly was! God blessed America. Allah is watching the Middle East and will strike every Jew in Israel, meanwhile the Talmud tells us that all Christians will burn in hot excrement in the Jewish hell.

Funny. None if it rings remotely true to me. So g’head – explain away …it’s still a delusion.

  • Jamie Jamie says:

Hi Annie, there is plenty of evidence of the historical reality of what is written in the Bible. Many archeological discoveries have corroborated the events, places and people described in the Bible. The documents that make up the Bible are unparalleled by any other religious scripture in the time frame that they were written in relation to the actual events they describe. I also find the content of the Bible describes better than any other worldview or religious system the human condition and the plan of God to correct that which is broken in humanity. Not only that but I have experienced the freedom that comes from living my life with Jesus loving and guiding me. I know that He is always with me and helps me live life according His plan and purposes. I know that I often ignore His direction and I end up making a mess of things, but I have also experienced His forgiveness and help to get back on track and deal appropriately with the people that I have hurt along the way.

So I can tell you with all confidence that this is not a geographical delusion born out of my family background. I have friends from around the world who have also experienced the life transforming work of Jesus in their lives. I have friends that grew up in Muslim homes in Morocco, Buddhist homes in Vietnam, atheist homes in Finland, and many more. We all share the same experience of discovering the love of God and accepting His gift of new life through His Son Jesus. He now lives out His name Immanuel in our lives because He is with us always.

  • Annie says:

    Hi Jamie!

I’ve heard these types of stories before. You can read the same thing about the belief system of most any Muslim and you will see your confidence (aka faith) is just that – faith. Faith is good as long as it’s not blind. Unfortunately, religiously founded faith comes in the form of cognitive dissonance, i.e. “mental blindness”. Start with the story of Yusef (Cat Stevens). It’s remarkably similar to your story and just as believable.

As for archaeological evidence; like what? We know for a fact that the world is billions of years old, began as a jagged rock formation (which would explain it’s pear shaped form) and that it has evolved. It’s more than Quantum Physics, though that does help, it’s also just a fact! The Earth is a small insignifant marble in the spectacular scheme of the Universe and I find it more than arrogant for people to actually believe they’re here because they’re special and that there’s some God watching them and listening in on their thoughts because of that “special friendship. I also noticed that most believe in the teachings of Jesus to coincide with their own beliefs. This would explain the 30k different denominations of Christianity. Jesus is who the individual is – made in the image of all the different people that say they believe in him. You really minimize just how grand the Universe is by throwing in stories of Jesus (who did exist but has left zero evidence that he was anything more than a charismatic preacher), and you miss important time in the one life you know you have, etc.

However, I would love for you to tell me of the “evidence” for all that’s happened according to the Biblical account. This should be interesting.

Before I go I do have three questions that have always puzzled me about Christians: Why do you pray for sick people to be healed if everything is God’s will?
Second, was Andrea Yates right to drown all of her children? If so, why? If not- why not?

    Thanks you.

  • Jamie Jamie says:

Hi Annie, let me try and answer your questions. First of all, God calls us to join Him in His work of bringing hope into this world. Jesus was active in healing people who were sick and He instructed His followers to join Him in that. Praying for sick people is one part of joining God in His work and it is amazing to see the results of that. Not everyone who is prayed for gets healed as we think they should be but when He does heal someone it is awesome.

As far as your second question is concerned, I have to admit that I do not know much about Andrea Yates but I feel pretty confident that her actions were wrong and came from a mind that was not in line with God’s voice or God’s desire. God is clear that murder is wrong so I have no reason to think that there was any justification for Mrs. Yates to take her children’s lives.

I must admit that is an odd question. Why do you ask it Annie?

  • Steve Koraly says:

Annie and all other Atheists… to save time read, “I Don’t Have Enough Faith to be an Atheist” Atheists believe everything exploded from nothing… for no reason. Then some of the inert everything spontaneously become self-replicating bits of DNA. an amazingly complex design, without any Designer. Strange having a multi-year conversation with someone and not know they’ve accused you of speaking falsehoods for a year and a half. But if anybody happens across this comment thread… Annie the atheist asked, “was Andrea Yates right to drown all of her children? If so, why? If not- why not?” If there is no God (moral law Giver) there is no moral law… no “right or wrong” Someone could murder everyone you loved and you would have no basis for saying they were wrong, other than yourself… but that would just be your opinion… which was in conflict with the murderers. On the other hand, God said, “Thou shall not murder.”
