Count the Days

“Teach us to number our days aright, that we may gain a heart of wisdom” Psalm 90:12

As my mind contemplates the opportunities available this fall to study, to work, to create, to lead, I wonder how best I can spend my time.

In order to decide, I first need to begin to number my days aright; to know that God has a purpose for today in my life. To understand that His design for my present is neither too great – that I could somehow screw up the cosmos with a mistake – nor too insignificant – that He is uninterested in who I am or what I do.

The lyrics of a Chris Rice song repeat in my mind, urging me to comprehend that although my life on earth is fleeting, there is significance in how I live it. “Teach us to count the days, teach us to make the days count. Lead us in better ways, somehow our souls forgot, life means so much.” (Life Means so Much by Chris Rice)

Each day has value because God has given it to me.

The length of time I have on earth is known by Him alone. How would He have me spend the time that He has allotted?

The family I have is a gift from God, as is the work that He has provided for me to do. Yet God also planned for my body to need sleep and nourishment. We need to be taught by God how to make wise decisions with our days.

~God give me the wisdom to number my days properly, to understand that life is precious and brief, but also that You have given me the right amount of time to do what You have planned.
