I am so busy and feel guilty for not serving at church

toobusyforchurchI am a member of an exciting and growing church. I am busy with a PhD in engineering and I have just got married. I love Jesus and love spending time with Him, but I have felt so guilty for not being involved with more at the church. I feel pathetic because I can’t, and miserable because if I do there is little time for anything else. I am afraid that if I don’t serve enough in the church, I will miss Jesus and what He is doing in the world. I don’t want to be one of those people that Jesus said to them, “I never knew you.”

Advice: Go spend some time alone with Jesus. Then spend time alone with your husband listening to Jesus together. Take a look at what you have resources for, how you work best and then you and your husband talk it over on what the two of you can do best, given the amount of time you really have. What this world needs to see more than anything else is a couple who loves each other and has put Christ in the centre of their marriage.

Keep doing that, connect with each other everyday, spending time in each other’s presence.

Non-Christians don’t come to Christ by watching us burn out. Many have finished their PhD’s and know how much of a commitment it requires. Pick up a copy of C.S. Lewis’ Mere Christianity and figure out for yourself what kind of Christian God wants you to be–not what others want you to be. Sometimes just going to church on Sunday and sharing Christ with your friends as the opportunity comes up is enough for that moment.
