How sad to read about the husbands leaving their famlies! i always see how it's more men than woman who abandon thier spouses and it seems to me it the woman who do all the praying and trying so hard to not let it happen. i pray for the men of this world! God bless you two!!

Luann - your response really touched my heart this morning - you are such a brave woman! My ex husband ended our marrage 10 years ago after 22 years and three sons - devestating for us all and I remembered that first very painful Christmas. I loved your 'gift' idea and will be using your idea this year - we too often forget the meaning of a spiritual Christmas.

I went through a separation last year from my husband whom I love dearly. He is ending our 34 year marriage now. That first Christmas was a difficult one without him, but with our 3 grown/married children & grandchildren. I used the fruits of the spirit, love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, etc. as 3x5 notes taped near the tree. In order to receive a gift you had to choose another person and tell why you see "love". or "joy", etc. in that person, then pick out a gift with their name on it (or you could choose one for yourself for being bold enough to get up and get going)...it was a great way to pass around gifts, each one got to really be blessed by the gift rather than shredding everything in 5 minutes or less. It was surprising how people (say parents) had to struggle a bit to think of a fruit they recognized in another person's life...yet they did so and it was the most meaningful spiritual Christmas we have probably ever had. Out of sorrow and discouragement, we found true JOY, what a precious time it was.

Great article. I see that most of the suggestions involve writing down our "thank you's". I've found that writing them down does make a difference. It affirms them differently that just saying "Thank God!"
