Your Tragedy Is Not Your Identity

Written by Marsha Marks

For we are God’s workmanship… (Ephesians 2:10).

A dear person in my family has been through horrors in life. But, the problem is, she thinks of herself in those terms, someone who has been through a horrible situation. Right away, when you meet her, you will hear from her, all about her tragedy. Her tragedy has become her identity. It is the filter through which she views herself.

I have another friend who has been successful in Hollywood. Her success goes before her; people approach her and say, “Aren’t you that actress? Didn’t I see you on TV? What happens now that your last show was canceled? What will you do? Who will you be?”

I was thinking about both these ladies this week. The one who chooses to view her identity through her tragedy, and the one whose identity is viewed by others through the filter of her acting success. And I was thinking our identity isn’t really found in our tragedy or our success.

Well, for goodness sake, where is it found? It is found…for the sake of Goodness, from the very center of Goodness. In the work of whose we are.

For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus, to do Good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do (Ephesians 2: 10).

How exciting is that! It’s like God made reservations for us in the restaurant of earth and set us at a table laden with the good works he wants us to complete.

I like to think of my identity that way, as reserved for me, beforehand. It raises my identity to new heights.
