This is a great topic, and I appreciate all your comments. I have been tithing all my life, but have at times fallen a little behind. One such time I decided to make it a 2½ times tithe in order to catch up. Two days latter, while cycling home from work, I saw a $100 bill drifting in the wind on the bike path. There was no one in sight, so I picked it up. Then I saw $50 and took that also. Had God had allowed someone to loose it for me? The next week-end we made a trip out of province to a family gathering, and the $150 was just the money wee needed! GOD PROVIDES.
Sometimes I even think we work ahead, in that we may receive more because we have given more. It is like God saying “I can now trust you with a larger amount.”
Again, yesterday I went with an empty pocket to visit my wife in the hospital, and asked the Lord how I would pay at the car-park. I got the idea to drive a few blocks from the hosp, and found free parking. Then, as I left her room, my wife said, “I've got too much money with me, take this amount home with you.” What can I do, but trust HIM to provide!
The good thing about a tithe is, it is fair for all: 1/10 of a large income, or 1/10 of a small income, we are all treated equally.
Blessings to each one of you, and just keep on giving (time or money...)!

This is a great article! I was just working on balancing my check book after giving my tithes and needed this reassurance. Making $300 bucks to last for groceries, gas, and everything else for the rest of the month doesn't seem feasiable, BUT GOD IS GOOD! Thanks again sister!

Hi NNAMDI
That is a tough one, but I think I would have to say that you should also tithe on your extra income, because otherwise you are holding that back from God. And as for dividing your tithe into 2 tithes I think that is perfectly fine; I'm pretty sure God never said anywhere in the Bible that your tithe has to all go to the same place. Hope this helps.

I have been paying tithe based on my salary and not on the extra income I make outside my salary, is it right. Also I pay my tithe to two different churches where I worship by dividing my tithe into two. Is it ok.

Hi Carole,

I have heard of people tithing their time, and I think it absolutely counts. The heart of tithing was never the money. It was always about saying "Everything I have, and everything I am is God's and I remind myself of this but intentionally returning a portion to Him."

I think for many of us, giving of our time is a harder sacrifice than giving our money. Churches cannot be loving communities if no one is there to help. I know that God sees your service and it is beautiful.

I don't earn any money but I have found a way to give back to the church and God. We give what we can money wise (retired) and I help by quilting (we sell the quilts which is money for the church), help run Children's Church, help with dinners, and am usually available for anything else we have going on. I say usually because I was supposed to have contributed to the Bazaar today but I have the flu. I give time. Is that considered tithing as well? I am but a humble servant to the Lord.

Thank God for this article. He is a faithful God indeed. It really pays to obey this commandment, He is always there to supply all our needs according to His riches in christ Jesus.

There are some great comments on here, I appreciate them all, thank you.

Tithing is not an easy issue. It's very personal and it hits a lot of buttons for many of us. I have had seasons where I have tithed like a pro and seasons when I have not. It's a step of faith, and like all steps of faith it requires us to step out into something we can't control, and that's scary. But what is amazing about God is that He only requires such a tiny little step. If I can make one move toward Him, He will cover the rest of the distance.

I'm not saying it's easy, and I'm not suggesting that I'm really good at it. It's a path I continue to walk and I know a lot of others walk it with me.

Money is tight for a lot of people right now and I wish I could say "Oh, you have bills to pay, here's the answer to fix everything." But I don't have that answer. What I do know is this: I know that God is merciful. I know that He promises to take care of us. I know that as parents there is a responsibility to provide for children and as citizens we have pay what we owe.

In my experience, God is not about numbers and charts, He's about the heart. So if things are really bad right now I'd see if there's a way to give anything. Ignore the percentages and if you can give $5 and tell God that you're trying and this is your place to start. As soon as you can do that tithing goes back to being something that you are doing rather than something you are not doing. It becomes part of your life again and can grow from there.
