Easy Breakfast in Bed

Written by Karen Neuburger

family_breakfastbedPreparing a classic breakfast in bed is no easy task, especially on a day when the stakes are high, like on Mother’s Day. According to Karen Neuburger, designer of all things comfy and cozy and a mother herself, if it’s done well, the rewards are huge! Here are Karen’s five simple tips to help you pull off a flawless and indulgent breakfast in bed:

  1. Plan ahead. If you wait until the morning of Mother’s Day to plan a menu, you may find that the milk has expired and her favorite cinnamon raisin toast is stale. Plan a menu a few days in advance and be sure to stock all of your ingredients the day before.
  2. Keep it simple. Breakfast in bed does not need to be a five-course meal. Remember that it is the thought that counts, so don’t feel pressured to experiment with a new soufflĂ© or frittata recipe. If she loves the blueberry muffins at a local bakery or the mocha lattĂ©s at the local coffee shop, slip out early in the morning and purchase her favorite goodies.
  3. Personalize it. Think about how you want to present the gift of breakfast in bed. Have her favorite flower in a vase on the breakfast tray or have her favorite music playing softly in the background. If she loves watching a particular movie when she’s lounging in bed, rent it the night before, and stock the bedside table with her favorite magazines or newspapers. Along with breakfast, bring her a gift of pajamas in her favorite color, style or material, a symbol of permission
to stay in bed all day long.
  4. Pamper her. It’s her day, right? Illuminate the room with scented candles. Take the kids out for a few hours so she can really have some “alone” time. Leave soft and cozy slippers or lounge socks by the edge of the bed in case she wants to venture out of the bedroom.
  5. Join her. Chances are that she won’t want to be alone for the entire day, so surround her with comfort and love. Offer her a special back rub or foot massage. Stay in pajamas all day with her. Prepare a big bowl of popcorn, hop in bed and watch her favorite movie together.
