A Christian counselor is a person who will come at the counseling session from a worldview based on the Bible. The counselor does not view people as simply spiritual beings with spiritual problems, however. Instead the counselor sees the individual as a physical, emotional, cognitive, and relational being. One focus of Christian counseling is to help others develop a biblical worldview of their own and recognize the core truth that guides right thinking and actions. The goal of Christian counseling is spiritual maturity, that will aid new perspective regarding the emotional and physical side of things.
Coming from a Christian worldview in counseling is important, just as your body, mind and spirit are linked and cannot be separated it is important to get help from a professional that will understand all these areas in the counseling venue and aid you in making the observations and changes necessary in each area. Having this basis is an important starting point in building trust with your counselor, by knowing where they are “coming from” in the worldview.
Ultimately the Christian counselor believes the Bible to be true, that it is God’s word written to people and this is the foundation from which to work as a moral code. Everyone has a worldview; you need to know what your counselor’s world view is.
If you are not a Christian you can talk to a Christian counselor and express your own worldview as it relates to the issues you are facing that bring you to a counselor. We at FamilyLife strongly encourage a Christian counselor for everyone. Click here for How do I find a Christian Counselor?
