Michael W. Smith – Almost an Icon Video provided by: I Am Second

He’s almost an icon in Christian music. The successful, gold-record, award-winning singer-songwriter who seems to have his life, family and walk in place. It probably all came easy for him, right? A product of natural talent?

The road to musical influence for Michael W. Smith has had multiple stops, including some places you would not expect. Such was the case at age 17 when he moved to Nashville to pursue a musical career. Leaving home with a foundation of God’s blessing, Michael’s first jobs took him to after-hours bars where he flirted with temptation—and more. The flirtation involved drug use, which ultimately led to a near-death experience. He was in the “pit of life, and looking at no escape.”

Then he asked for God to do anything to get his attention. With that came Michael’s rescue, leading to the impact his songs have brought to millions and an identity that is secure in Christ.

Yes isn’t it wonderful when we hear ‘the rest of the story’ as it were? I too was so blessed to hear Michael’s testimony and to hear what happened when he let his guard down. What a good reminder to all of us that we need to always keep our eyes fixed on Jesus and be always on the alert and put on our spiritual armor as it tells us to in Ephesians 6!

What a blessing it was to listen to Micheal’s testimony. Being African American, you would expect me to purchase gospel CD’S. But the first CD I ever purchased was Micheal’s and I was richly blessed. When he sings, he is singing directly to God.His songs brings you directly into the presence of God. God had a plan for Micheal, he strayed for a while but he allowed God to put him back on track. I praise God because if Micheal had not followed God’s plan, I would have never been blessed by his music. God Bless You brother Micheal and may God continue to use you to bless His people and those who have not yet decided to become a child of God.
