Buried Talent Video provided by: 36 Parables

It was once wisely observed that “Success is not measured by what you are compared to others; success is measured by what you are compared to what you could be.” (Bill Gothard)

If you haven’t yet watched the short film “Buried Talent,” please take a look. It illustrates two common problems: One, comparing ourselves to others … and two, being scared or unwilling to fully use talents that we’ve been given.

Have you ever encountered one or both of these obstacles to your success? What do you think about the quote above?

Yes there were two beautiful pictures, but the third canvas was empty and that was the point. He was afraid to start, afraid to explore his talent, so like the servant in the old bible story, he buried his talent. What a sad reflection when there could have been three beautiful pictures instead if only he had tried.

Umm just what was the point?? Apart from two beautiful pictures??

This was awesome! Just the push I needed! Thank you!

  • Maggie says:

Failure and success have the common denominator that both can be thwarted by fear. If I fear failure and I do not try, then I will never embrace the opportunity to succeed, but by embracing my creativity and being true to the gifts God has given me I can never fail.

wow brilliant and rich in clear metaphor. Got fooled early on by a couple of things. Lesson learned: dont delay or procrastinate. You can rest when the work is done. Its never too late

What a powerful reminder of both opportunities and accountability for that which has been entrusted to us! Thanks for sharing such a thought-provoking presentation.

Congrats to you Carol and thanks Don for your insight. I too have been stalled for 30 years, forced to go in a direction I never wanted. Now in my late fifties I’m trying to reconnect with the talents God gave me. But I find with years come fears and doubts I never entertained when I was younger. I understand the end of the video.

I’m even make it sound a little sweeter. “You don’t have to think of it as the life your parents or your friends or your family or your company gave you. It’s the life that You have! You’re Jesus! Whatever you do, it’s not selfish! You’re painting the will of God!” Thank you Jesus for dying in our place! This is what it means to be a Christ-ian if you go by that label.

I have good news for you. The Laws of Life were fulfilled by Jesus on the cross perfectly. No one else could fulfilled them! Including the Parable of the Talent which this story comes from. Any rule or regulation you find in the Bible – New Testament or Old Testament-is covered in Jesus’s blood so you are free to do Whatever you want in the life he gave you. Thank Jesus because he took that miserable no-courage no-faith miserable guy and died in his place and in exchange He gave His Broken and Bold Courage and Endless Faith and Joy and gave it to that man! He’s a Man now! Not just a man. Same for you Lady! This happened 2000 years ago. Maybe even outside of time and space. On the eternal cross! This is so true, that Jesus said on the cross, “It is finished!” That man definitely has a hope! Just thank Jesus and have fun doing whatever! You’re Master of the Universe because He died for you! “Where sin increases, [Blood-bought] grace increases all the more!” Thank Jesus!

Breathtaking. It took a a diagnosis of cancer to get me moving in my direction. I am now at 54 picking up where I stalled in 20′s. The end of the video should be…get up and try again. This time with the truth.

Don, that’s brilliant! Thanks for the insight.

  • Don says:

You often hear “Most people go to their grave with their music still in their head”. Whether it be a conductor’s baton, an artist’s brush, or a simple business plan, you don’t know just what you can do until you try. What diseases would be gone or inventions would we have if we only picked up our brush and put our thoughts on the canvas?
