I am trying to win the battle against bulimia

winoverbulimiaI’m 24 and am in treatment for bulimia. I can see the difference in my way of thinking and I really feel the benefits of Group Therapy and individual therapy. My problem is that I’ve been on Luvox for the last year and it really helped at first to curb my obsessiveness and anxiety. Then, when the symptoms began to return, my dose needed to be changed but I couldn’t tell my doctor the truth about how I’m doing and how the medicine is working. I want her to think I’m doing so much better each time. Is there a time schedule to get better? I really want to kick this annoying disorder. It’s so hard. Any advice relating to recovery, medication, and treatments for bulimia would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Advice: Treatment for bulimia is outside the scope of our practice so we usually refer out to the specialists. It sounds like you have those people in your life right now. Be entirely honest with your doctor. Bulimia usually starts when we need more control in our life and we can’t seem to find any other way to get it; so we use food. Obsessive thinking is often generational, as well as anxiety. It’s not your fault, but these people can help you get better.

They are also working on behavioral modification to help you find other things in your life, to be obsessed with healthier things. Most successful people are a little obsessed with their focus of interest. It’s a matter of finding a focus worthwhile. There is no timetable for healing. This is probably something you will have to pay attention to all your life. Anxiety and obsessiveness will leak out onto other things in your life. We have observed that prayer helps. Are you involved in a local church or women’s Bible study? Make sure that they are okay with counseling before you join them. If it feels they are looking down their nose at you, find another group. There are lots of them. Look for a good one. Tell us where you live and we’ll try to find a group for you.
