I have a friend who is controlling

controllingfriendI’m in high school and I have a friend who is controlling another one of my friends. He doesn’t want her to hang out with anyone else, especially me. My friend doesn’t necessarily approve of the way she is being treated. I was just wondering what to tell her to say to him. Thanks.

Advice: High school is not the easiest stage of life, though possibly the funnest. We usually allow someone to control us because we are afraid of their anger. People are either controlling or angry. They get angry when they get frustrated because we don’t cooperate. It is a good idea to tell the person, “Thank you so much for thinking about me. I won’t be going there with you. I will be having lunch with him.” Don’t rationalize, justify, or defend; just tell the person what you will be doing. The controlled person needs to learn how to set limits and then reinforce them. Dance of Anger

by Harriet Lerner will help with these issues.
