My dreams seem like movies

moviedreamsI’m 29 years old. Since my early childhood, my dreams have been very vivid and they look like a whole movie, or series of movies every night! The ‘themes’ are miscellaneous, from frightening situations, hunting, arguing, struggle to survive, sometimes dancing (with lots of people)and rarely laughing. Sometimes, I fly, too, usually above wonderful places I’ve never seen in real life. I always remember colors in my dreams and usually vivid ones.

Advice: Please tell us more about your childhood and your family history. There are all sorts of reasons for the kind of dreams you describe. Some people have weaker senses of self, so it seems easier for past history to live in them and sweep over them. A lot of ancestral information is contained in each person’s DNA. The problem for you is that you probably have a more difficult time having your own life.

It would seem that you would want to find a professional counselor who can help you strengthen your sense of self, a more solid sense of who you are. You wouldn’t need to tell the counselor about your dreams; because what you need is to work on you and who you are, who you want to be, your interests. Develop your artistic talent, etc. What kind of a career do you want to pursue? Learn how to make friends and maintain those friendships, rather than live too much in the world of your imagination. Let us know what you think.

    Hi Lui,
You are not alone! It seems like lots of people have dreams that feel like movies, but they are caused by a lot of different things.

What you do in your waking hours can impact them, as can stress or worrying about what is happening. That might be why you dream about the restaurant that you manage. Do you worry about things at work? Do you find yourself being anxious about it? That will often reflect in our dreams when we are worried about things in real life. What do you fear? I have dreams that feel like movies a lot. This is the first time I googled it. A lot of times am never in them. I see my dream in 1st or 3rd person view, but am not a dream story characters. They don’t look like me. Sometimes I am but must it some random person I don’t ever know. Not from tv, in real life or games I play . All I know is that sometimes I do feel tired in the morning, but I don’t know if its the dream or the long hrs I put in to work. I work like 13 hrs days some times. What I do know is that they are my Fav type of dreams. Also I have a lot of dreams about work. I the manger of a polish resturant and have lots of dreams about it. Any toughts way?

    Hi jahjazki -

It’s interesting that you have action-type dreams and then wake up feeling tired. Are you active in your waking hours? I wonder if it would help you wake up feeling more refreshed if you had exercise regularly, and perhaps still dream but not sleep restlessly if you are waking up feeling tired.

  • jahjazki says:

Glad to know am not alone in this. It is entertaining but . . .
I so hate the puffy-eyes tired look i get when i wake up
especially coming off an action-adventure type of dream.
Sometimes it’s hard for me to wake up coz i get so into
it at times. Yeah its probably my repressed thoughts in
life and in myself plus having an artistic mind adds up the to the
vividness and colors. Oh well,as long as this aint a serious
disorder, then am fine with this. :)

Sounds like you really do have a very vivid imagination Georgia!! I didn’t think that I did but some of my dreams are pretty ‘out there’ too! You shouldn’t be surprised that you are tired when you wake up…sounds like you are very active in your dreams so your mind isn’t getting much rest.

  • Georgia says:

This is crazy, I’m exactly the same. Sometimes my dreams are like movies, sometimes they’re like very extended video games; in those ones I’m usually lucid, and as I’m quite determined I always have to go back and re-do them to get the right result. They’re so much fun! My dreams always have an element of saving someone, and I’m usually the main character. They’ve been like this as long as I can remember, but over the years they’re becoming more and more complex ;) I do have a very vivid imagination, and because I’m 18 I don’t have a hugely strong sense of self… I’m also really tired when I wake up, and sometimes I can barely remember the previous day, as if I’ve lived a whole lifetime in that time. I can return into a dream if I wake up in the night. I love it!

So how do you feel about that Mike? What does your daughter feel like when she has those dreams?

  • mike says:

I have been having movie like dreams since I was 5. I am 30 now and like some you I feel I can write a movie. My daughter is 9 and she has same type of dreams. Some of the stuff she dreams are thing’s she doesn’t understand yet or are not on TV.

  • Doris says:

Rafael and Charlie, sounds like you have quite the vivid imaginations! It is interesting to try to figure out why we dream what we dream, and what it is that makes some people have such vivid dreams and others not have them.

Illness can contribute in some cases ie when a person is running a high fever they often have vivid dreams. Some medications also can contribute to more violent or bizarre dreams.

However in the case of this particular question the dreams were linked to issues in their childhood growing up and these are the kind of dreams that indicate that there are issues that we need to deal with in order to no longer have those dreams.

  • Charlie says:

I have movie like dreams almost every night, sometimes with ridiculously complex plots even I couldn’t think of If I was writing it. I wake up feeling unrefreshed maybe even worse off than when I went to sleep, it is getting ridiculous heaving myself out of bed in the morning. Had a cool one the other day – zombie apocalypse movie, was crazy

  • rafael uvalle says:

this happens to me every night! its such a trip its just like a movie and it repeats sometimes. I get into some the weirdest adventures something you’d only see in a moviee i kinda like it haha its like im entertained while im sleeping.

So Ian and Matt (and anyone else who has vivid dreams) where does that come from? Is it a highly visual imagination or do you think there is another source? I know my wife gets frustrated with me because when she asks what my dreams are I have to respond, “Ummmm, I don’t remember.” That also happens when she asks me what I watched on TV :)

  • Matt says:

steph … I have the same situation… They are so vivid right when I wake. It is usually an incredible adventure. Just woke up from a 2 thumbs up one.. Email me to talk

  • Ian says:

I have similar dreams. I have a very developed sense of self and am comfortable with who I am. I dont really think you need to go to a counselor.

  • Doris says:

Isn’t it interesting Stephanie, that we all dream in different ways and some in fact are so vivid that they seem real. Have you every written them out and tracked to see what you did that day?

  • Robert says:

    Stephanie June 19th 2011;
I would suggest that you ask Jesus to be with you and fill you with the Holy spirit and then when your dreams come, you will have someone there to consult, to find out where they are coming from…”Blessed Jesus be with Stephanie in her dreams, be with her and guide her, surround her with your presence and keep her in your light…in your name, Jesus amen.”

  • Stephanie says:

My dreams are usually unbelievably vivid. Not many are nightmares, because they don’t feel like movies. But the “good dreams” are beautiful and teach whole life lessons on love, religion, and hope. These dreams I am able to write screenplays for. I have more than once woke up from these dreams thinking “that could be a movie”. I’m never upset with these dreams. They’re so beautiful. I just want to know where they are coming from.

  • kazza says:

Thank goodness! I thought it was just me – what a relief
I have dreams that are like screenplays and movies, really exciting, like Karen above says I am exhausted when I wake up. The dreams usually contain all unknown characters, the dialogue and storylines are brilliant. Maybe I should turn them into real screenplays and submit.
I would like to know how and why this happens – I do have “normal” type dreams as well…………..

  • Reginald Dixon-Naperville IL says:

I tell my wife Sonya all the time how much I love her
we communicate to each other. I think that is the key to any marriage.

  • Karen says:

I also have dreams that are like long movies. If I wake up I go straight back into them from where I left off. Its amazing! I always feel so tired in the mornings like I have had no rest at all. A friend mentioned today that I may be astro travelling ie helping other people in need as I could be a stronger spirit? Who knows? If I didn’t dream I would hate it, I love dreaming every night but some are more exhausting than others.

  • Linda says:

I am doing the same thing. I could write screenplays. Sometimes it is hard to differentiate my dreams from reality. I dream things and think someone must have told me that. I don’t know how I am getting any rest at night? I do have a very weak sense of who I am. I try to be one thing but always feel like I am a fake. Or not being the best person I could be. I really don’t do anything wrong. It’s like there are two of me’s..I don’t think I’m schizophrenic. Who knows?
