Will medication help for depression?

Written by Dr. Ginger Gabriel, Ph.D., M.F.T

effexordepressedPlease help me. I am a 22 year old female and I am very depressed. I can’t sleep, eat, or think straight and I keep forgetting the littlest things. I hate feeling like this. I don’t know what to do. I cry all the time and just want to be alone. I am on Effexor but that isn’t working. Do you have any advice on what I can do? I am just so tired and want to feel like my old self again.

Advice: Effexor is just one of many wonderful medications that have helped people with their depression. Keep working with your psychiatrist. Tell him what works and what doesn’t work.

I’m wondering how long you have felt depressed. Is this something new or have you felt depressed
for a long time? Are you also getting counselling? Studies show that medication without counselling doesn’t work as well as it does in conjunction with counselling. If feeling depressed is a new thing for you, then there is a reason for this change in mood. Keep nagging at your doctor to keep trying. Also find a good counsellor to help.
