Beauty Tips for Fine Hair

Written by Diane Dick

life_finehairFine, straight hair usually contains too much moisture. This is why the hair lays flat and limp. It is important to keep the hair clean and dry.    If your hair is fine and not chemically treated, get your stylist to recommend a good shampoo for fine hair and forgo the conditioner. Once a week protein treatments work wonders. Redken has two protein treatments, P.P.T. or CAT, that work great.

If your hair is fine and chemically treated, permed or coloured, use a shampoo for fine hair and a conditioner that will work on the inside of the hair. Use the conditioner more on the lengths of the hair and try to keep it away from the scalp. If the roots are free of conditioner, the hair will be fluffier.

To style fine hair, first blow-dry the hair trying to get more volume at the roots. Use a light styling lotion to create volume without weighing the hair down. For a fancier, fuller look, use Velcro rollers on pre-dried hair and a light hair spray and apply heat. Hot rollers are excellent also. Aerosol hair sprays work best on fine hair because they don’t weigh the hair down.

A good haircut to remove split ends is highly recommended. Ask your stylist to recommend a haircut that will compliment your fine hair and suit your features.   Very long hair is usually not recommended for fine, thin hair. If you must wear it long, keep the ends blunt and use a protein treatment once a week. A colour or perm usually adds body to fine, limp hair

Hey there Victoria! I’m glad you found our site and took the time to write down your questions. We don’t really have a beauty expert that is able to respond but as someone with very fine hair I thought I could maybe answer your questions.

It’s normal for hair to follow out, but not in great big gobs. If hair loss is excessive it could be a problem with your thyroid. Have you had it checked lately? If not, that’s a place to start.

If you find that you have a lot of split ends, you most likely need to get it cut more often to keep it healthier. Your hair reflects what else is going on in your body too. Do you have a lot of stress in your life? That will show up in your hair. Also different medications will also affect your hair.

I don’t know if any of these things ring a bell, but as I said, I myself have really thin hair so I have learned a lot about keeping it healthy over the years.

@LA gal, have you read this article? http://glamouredited.com/hair/faceshape.html

I have fine, thin, wavy hair and it’s getting much nicer. Here are some things I do to care for my hair:
Use a wide-toothed comb instead of a brush–it’s much gentler
Most nights before bed, comb and braid my hair
After establishing an effective hair care routine, cut MOST of my split ends off; i.e. 4-6 inches
    Showering:
Use a light shampoo on roots; drag it down through the rest of your hair
    Cationic conditioner every two days
Fruitamin conditioner every other day (“olive oil-rich”) (it’s not normal conditioner at all, but if you’re gentle with a comb, it adds strength!)
Don’t use much conditioner on the roots (except the base of the back where it gets all tangly very, very easily); mostly on the “ends” which I define as anything that would be part of a ponytail.
Allow time for my hair to dry a little before I put it under a coat or scarf or the wind.
Comb it throughout the day if necessary.

…Yeah, this sounds really neurotic and I should probably cut my hair really short, I’m just afraid it will look bad with my face!

I don’t know how differently it would work on you very curly girls. You probably want something very slippery and potent to allow your hair to be manageable and also to prevent breakage. What are your hair management methods?

Any recommended hairstyle for a diamond face girl like me? Thank you for your future response here. I will wait for it. :P

I have straight hair that I don’t color and I swear that Shielo’s Volume Line gives me more swing to my hair when I use it. I also use Shielo’s Volume Hairspray (its Flexible Hold) on my daughter sometimes and I notice that her flyaways are much neater after using the Shielo brand.

    The scent is AMAZING!

I have also gotten compliments on the scent from people when my hair was dry. I recommend this shampoo to anyone who is looking to stretch out their haircut visits. Your hair stays healthy and smells great.

  • Eddie2 says:

I never heard of the Shielo brand. However, on a tip from someone else…..I tried it….and it’s AWESOME! Specifically their Volume line. It makes your hair VERY thick the very first time you use it. It only contains natural ingredients too! Great product! If you want to thicken your hair for a GREAT price for a quality shampoo then you might want to try this product! I was shocked, but this shampoo is the best thickening shampoo that I have ever used (and I’ve used a many). Great Product!

I have very fine thinning hair. I used to use a volumizing mousse pomade by anasazi that helped put body into my hair but is no longer made. Any ideas for a good styling aid to add vulume?

  • WomanNYC says:

I have tried dozens of different conditioners but the Hydrate Conditioner from Shielo Hair succeeds them all. I have found that many conditioners can leave your hair looking a little greasy and worn down, especially if you have thin hair like me. However, after using the Hydrate Vibrancy Conditioner I feel as though I have just stepped out of a hair salon to get my hair professionally treated. It always leaves my hair with more body & shine and it smells great too! You can truely tell the difference after using it just one time.

I’m 12 almost 13, and I have very fine hair. I do have a lot of it but it doesn’t seem to make a difference. In Nov. of 2010 I got a wave perm and I loved it. To be honest, it looked great but I wasn’t use to actually putting that much effort into my hair. But it wore off. So everydayI put my hair in a ponytail or bun. I could leave my hair down at school but that would mean brushing it every time I go to my locker which looks weird to other kids. I don’t like to schrunch my hair because I can’t get it to not look wet. I just want the wave, Duh..

i have this thick short hair and tis kinda wavy..! i want to straighten it but without permanent or ironing. i hear that our hair gets straight with some hair treatment done at home pleae suggest !

  • Natalie says:

My hair is fine, but I have a lot of it. Unfortunately my head is little, so I really need volume. My hair has almost of full head of high lights, and I had a keratin treatment done a month ago. It make my hair soft ect, but took any body out of it. It’s getting more body now, and the keratin treatment is quickly washing out. I use sulfate free, organic products too. My hair was never that damages at all, but it is prone to breakage. The keratin treament is way too expensive, so I want to keep the protien/keratin in my hair, but use something that is reasonably priced that I can take home and use. I live in the inner west of Sydney Australia. Any suggestions?

  • Chentelle says:

I have fine and oily hair and find it really difficult to get any sort of volume to it.My hair also falls out alot since the birth of my last child.I have tried all different tyes of shampoo’s for my hair type but nothing seems to work very well.

  • Tanya B says:

Typically when you think of Made from Earth you think of organic and healthy hair products – but I tried the Tea + Protein Shampoo because even though I have a lot of hair, it is fine and I heard it aids in the strength and vitality of the hair follicles. I have to say that I have loved this product! I even got my mom using it, and my best friend.

I have tried other products of this line as well, and have similarly enjoyed the results!
