Winter Skincare

life_winterskincareWhen the winter winds blow, your skin needs special protection.

Dry, cold winter air–especially wind–robs skin of moisture and can lead to a dull, flat appearance. “Be sure to bundle up during blustery, cold weather and adjust your skin care routine,” says Carol Rennehan, consultant of Mary Kay Cosmetics, Ltd. “This will help preserve your skin’s moisture balance and keep it radiant and healthy looking.”

Use moisturizers

Apply hand cream before donning mittens or gloves to let moisture sink in and soften hands and cuticles.

Pamper hands, feet, knees and elbows with a rich moisturizer. Lock in moisture by applying cream before bedtime and then slip thick socks on feet and thin gloves on hands while sleeping. “You’ll start the next day with softer, better feeling skin than you went to bed with,” Rennehan says.

Try new make-up routines

Alter your skin care routine to compensate for weather changes. Try applying a water-based foundation over a light moisturizer or use a cream foundation. Either one will give you better skin hydration and easier make-up application on drier skin.

Exfoliate your skin

Exfoliate to maintain skin’s smooth texture and silky feel. Use a facial mask twice a week to exfoliate dry, dead skin cells that may keep skin from looking as bright and fresh as it should. Use a buffing cream and loofah sponge on body skin to promote smoother, softer skin.

Use sunscreen

Don’t forget sun protection even when it’s cold and snowy. Sunscreen should be applied year round to guard against the visible signs of aging due to excessive sun exposure and the risk of skin cancer.
