A Common Problem For Women

Written by Wellness Matters

life_yeastinfectionsA vaginal yeast infection is an infection that is generally caused by an overgrowth of the yeast called Candida albicans. This fungus is always present in your body, where it usually lives in harmony with other organisms. However, some factors cause Candida to multiply too rapidly which effect the pH balance and acidity of the vagina. The most common causes are:

  • Antibiotics
  • Pregnancy (higher risk near full-term)
  • Oral contraceptives
  • Diabetes
  • Menstruation
  • Continuous moisture of the vagina
  • Steroids

The symptoms of a vaginal yeast infection are uncomfortable and usually obvious, although they could be mistaken for something else. Don’t try to treat yourself the first time. Consult your doctor to confirm the diagnosis. Once you’ve had this infection, you will probably recognize the symptoms if it recurs. The symptoms are:

  • Thick, yellowish-white vaginal discharge.
  • Seventy-five per cent of women will suffer from at least one infection and fifty per cent of these will have it more than once.

To reduce your risk of infection:

  • Avoid tight fitting clothing.
  • Wear cotton underwear that breathes.
  • Avoid wearing pantyhose every day.
  • Always dry your body thoroughly before getting dressed.
  • Don’t stay in a wet swimming suit or wet clothes; change as soon as possible.
  • Avoid unnecessary douching
  • Avoid strong soap, scented sanitary pads or perfumed coloured toilet paper.

Most vaginal yeast infections are treated easily with over-the-counter or prescription medication. Visit your doctor to find out the best products. Remember to finish your medication even after the symptoms disappear. Avoid intercourse during treatment.
