Katrina, one of the deadliest and most destructive hurricanes in US history completely devastated our city on August 29, 2005. Immediately following this tragedy, there was an outpouring from the US and the world to do all they could to help. Almost two years later, stories from New Orleans are no longer in the headlines, and many have forgotten the struggles we continue to face every day.
Only half of the city’s population has been able to return home, and thousands of buildings still remain damaged and abandoned. Churches saw complete devastation from the hurricane and are now struggling to keep any type of ministry going. People are crying out for help and hope.
“To create a sustainable movement throughout New Orleans where individuals and communities are transformed by the power of Jesus Christ.” As a result, approximately 16 partnering churches and ministries have come together to act as a catalyst and organize as well as train volunteers to spread a message of hope and healing to hundreds of thousands of hurting people in New Orleans through a media initiative and by volunteer mobilization.
“My hope is that this strategy will stir up potential interest in building a sustainable movement” Pete Kelly City Champion, New Orleans A media blitz with ads on TV, radio, print and the internet featuring stories from individuals such as:
All of whom experienced a dramatic life transition from experiencing the hurricane - how they found or renewed their relationships with Christ. People can call 1-866-333-NOLA or check out this website where they can discover the power to change. Volunteers from one of the partnering churches will connect those that respond.
During this time, you and/or others you know may being questioning the meaning of life. With lawn signs, tv and radio ads, there is a buzz around the city. If you have already found the power to change, but want to grow and connect with others during this time, our online learning modules are a great tool to help you do that!
The Power to Change New Orleans strategy is broken into two phases. Phase 1 is from August 13 to September 10. This is designed around the second anniversary of Katrina and will act as a catalyst for building an ongoing movement where people can engage in transforming our city. It also designed to give people a taste of Power to Change, which helps gain credibility and build working relationships. This is key for creating buy-in for the longer-term plan which involves several domain initiatives such as reaching families, students, athletes, business leaders, etc. Plus, it will help with a larger engagement of churches, organizations and leaders, thousands of individuals experiencing the online learning modules, and ultimately, more people discovering the power to change.
