Steve Berg On Canada’s Frontiers

Written by Eric Reynolds

“As Canadians, we are self-effacing in many ways,” says Steve Berg, the new leader for

the government domain of Power To Change. “Frankly, we don’t know much of our history and heritage.” Canada’s motto is the case-in-point he used to explain this statement. “On the stones of Parliament Hill, in Latin, are inscribed these words: ‘A Mari usque ad Mare.’ They come from Psalm 72:8.” May he rule from sea to sea and from the River to the ends of the earth.

He’s right. But when I Google search those words, I don’t find anything about the prayer and blessing to king Solomon, or about his godly reign that would impact all the nations.

“And here we are,” Steve sums up. “We don’t recognize the dominion of God over us. We are as lost as any other country.” It’s a realization that many Christians, if not all, have come to. But he doesn’t stop there.

“We seek to impact government through changed lives. I responded to that call of God on my life and started asking: what could we do to impact the governments?” It’s a question that is already being answered. Christian Embassy has been active in Ottawa for 27 years doing incredible work. But our government is more than Federal. The remaining sectors constitute the majority of politicians and officials and function across the country. To meet this need, Christian Embassy is going into uncharted territory. “It’s a blank page and… I’m humbled to say… I get to write on it.”

They’re not doing it alone. Steve is in discussion with leaders like Tim Schindel who are asking the same question: what would it look like to have a spiritual impact across Canada? Tim’s Leading Influence Ministries is a prime example of the kind of model that could be used across the country. The potential partnership is exciting to say the least.

“Queen’s Park in Toronto is our next focus. Pray for us. By incremental growth, every province and capital city across the country can be impacted.” It’s a tight range and a tough shot but Steve knows this. “You know how many people we want to reach? 1,129. That’s the amount of elected and appointed officials in this country.” We look forward to seeing Steve and Christian Embassy work in the years to come as they seek to change the spiritual direction of the nation we call home.
