I Only Feel Alone at Church
A few years ago I was attending a fairly large church. In early September we had a ministry fair in the gym. There was popcorn and small children running around and little tables set up for each of the church’s outreaches and activities. As I made my way round the gym I came to Ladies’ Bible Study table. “Oh... >Read More

Raise a Glass for Earth Day
My younger brother, Dave, is very conscious of the world around him and the way that he interacts with the people and resources in that world. For years he and his wife kept a signed pinned to the back of their front door that read “Buy Less Stuff”. When did little brothers get so smart?
Recently he showed me a... >Read More

5 Tips for Brides
Years ago, my roommate was engaged for a year and a half. For 18 months our apartment was covered in magazines and tulle samples, lists and favors. Eventually the day came and it was lovely. As I walked out of the sanctuary behind the bride and groom the groom looked at his watch, turned to me and said, ... >Read More

Does God Break People on Purpose?
I was discussing the word “disability” with a friend of mine and realized how easy it is for that word to sound like “broken”. I asked him “Does God break people on purpose?” While our conversation veered away to other topics, the question has stuck with me. Does God break people on purpose?
It’s a heavy question, one... >Read More

Make the Connection
A couple of weeks ago I was right in the middle of downtown Vancouver when Sidney Crosby scored the winning goal in the men’s hockey final at the 2010 Olympics. The roar that came up from the crowd was incredible. Walking down the street people were laughing and cheering and waving flags. Perfect strangers were high fiving EVERYONE.

Hockey Hero Is Unafraid
There’s been a lot of talk of hockey this week. The US Olympic men’s hockey team beat Canada for the first time since 1960. I know we Canadians are a polite bunch, but that’s going to sting for a while.
It wasn’t the first time the country was united behind a single game and it won’t be the last. Ask... >Read More

Summer Reading
On the side of the library in White Rock, BC they have a quote from William Butler Yeats in foot-high letters. It reads, “Take down this book and slowly read”. It’s such excellent advice, especially for summer.
There is something about the slow days of summers that just begs for the pages of an open book. For some of us,... >Read More
