Beginning a Relationship With God

Written by admin

When you hear someone mention a “relationship with God,” what do you think
of? Who is He, and is it possible for ladies and men today to actually have
that relationship? Many claim that it is. How would you begin it, and what
would it look like? Explore the concept of having a “relationship with God” through this study.

1. Describe what a relationship with God means to you. More thoughts...
Read John 15:15, Ephesians 1:4-5, and 1 John 3:1. Throughout the New Testament, God clarified that we are equal in His sight and His words extend to all of us. A relationship with God is a friendship. More than friends of God, God has chosen us and adopted us into His family, with all the rights and privileges that go with it.
2. What hinders a relationship with God? What is sin? More thoughts...
Read Isaiah 59:1-2, Psalm 66:18, Ephesians 2:12–14, Romans 10:13, and Joel 2:12-13. Sin is anything that we do wrong. It can be breaking a specific command of God or just falling short of the standard that God sets. Sin can create a barrier between you and God. Sin may be the reason why it seems that God is not responding to your prayers. The Old and New Testament tell us that sin separates us from God. Yet, we don’t need to fear that sin permanently separates us from God, because God always hears sincere repentance.
3. Is it possible for you to live a life without sin? More thoughts...
Read 1 Kings 8:46, Romans 3:10, and Romans 3:23. Moses gave the Israelites the Ten Commandments (Ex. 20:1–20) from God. If anyone thinks they can keep all of them, Jesus took the requirement a step further. In His Sermon on the Mount (Matt 5-7). He said that hating your brother was equivalent to murder (Matt 5:21-22) and that lust was the same as adultery (Matt 5:27-28). Those two alone catch most of us!
4. What does it mean to repent? More thoughts...
Read Ezekiel 18:30-31 and Acts 3:19. Repentance has two parts. The first is admitting you were wrong or being sorry for what you did. The second aspect is turning away from that wrong, or agreeing that you need to go in the opposite direction.
5. Jesus Christ offers you a new life. What does this mean? More thoughts...
The book of John is full of references showing Jesus has, and indeed is, life for us. Read what John has to say: John 1:4, 3:16, 3:36, 4:14, 5:21-26, 5:39, 6:33-35, 6:40, 6:47-48, 6:68, 8:12, 10:10, 11:25, 14:6, 17:2-3, and 20:31.
6. Can you earn your way to Heaven? More thoughts...
Read Ephesians 2:4-5, 8-9, Acts 15:11, Romans 3:23-24, Romans 11:6, and Titus 3:4–7. All of these verses were written by the Apostle Paul through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. Over and over, he emphasizes that it is by grace (God’s unmerited favour) that we are saved.
7. How do feelings affect your relationship with God? More thoughts...
Read Hebrews 13:8, John 14:6, and Romans 8:38-39. Our feelings change, but God does not. Therefore, our feelings do not change the truth about God and His love for us.
