Carols of Christmas: The Birthday of a King

Written by admin

The birth of a child is a special time! When one has longed for that little one, and eagerly waited for his or her arrival, there is such joy when the birth finally comes! Birthdays are often a very special way to celebrate the ways that a person is treasured. Christmas is a time when we celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. In 1890 William Neidlinger wrote the Christmas carol known today as “The Birthday of a King.” We invite you to consider the message of this carol, “The Birthday of a King.”

In the little village of Bethlehem,
There lay a Child one day;
And the sky was bright with a holy light
O’er the place where Jesus lay.

Alleluia! O how the angels sang.
Alleluia! How it rang!
And the sky was bright with a holy light
’Twas the birthday of a King.

’Twas a humble birthplace, but O how much
God gave to us that day,
From the manger bed what a path has led,
What a perfect, holy way.
