Choose Love: Whole-Hearted Living for Eternity

Written by admin

Often, when we think of commands, we think of things we must do, orders we must obey. Yet, when asked which was the greatest commandment, Jesus replied, ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbour as yourself.’

By saying this, Jesus was saying that loving goes way beyond actions. It involves our whole being and finds it’s root in what is happening in our heart, our soul and our mind. The Bible also tells us that we love because God first loved us. What does God mean when he declares that He loves us? And what does it mean to love God and to love our neighbour? In this study, we begin to ponder these all-important questions.

Questions to ponder:  The first rule of philosophical discussion is: Define the terms under discussion. Before discussing love, it is a good idea to seek to define it. Why not take some time to ponder some or all of the following questions, either alone, or with family or friends?

What is love?  Is there a definition of love everyone will recognize as the true definition or is such a universal understanding of love impossible?  Why do some languages  distinguish between different types of love by using different words for each type, while other languages use the same word for all forms of love?  What definitions of love are being presented in the media? What is God’s definition of love? Is His definition of love the only true one?

1. In John 15:9-11, Jesus makes the following amazing statement: "As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you; abide in my love. If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in His love. These things I have spoken to you, that my joy might be in you, and that your joy might be full." According to this passage, whose love are we to abide in? What do you think it means to abide or remain in his love? More thoughts...
How much does Christ love you, according to this passage? What is your reaction to this statement?
2. Under what circumstances does Jesus make this statement? What is His Father asking him to do in the next 24 hours? More thoughts...
(To discover the answer to this question, simply read the next few chapters of the Gospel of John.)
3. In your opinion, why can Jesus so confidently assert His Father's love for Him under such circumstances? More thoughts...
(See Hebrews 12:1-11 for additional ideas.)

5. In order to trust God's love for us and express it towards others, we need to understand his definition of love. Go to 1 Corinthians 13 for such a definition. Read the whole chapter several times, slowly and reflectively. Then, answer the following questions. List the qualities of love Paul gives in this chapter. Compare this list to the list of the qualities of the fruit of the Spirit. What do you observe?
6. How important is love according to this passage? Do you think God follows this principle himself? Explain.
7. Replace the words "love" in this chapter with the words: "God's love for me" and write out the text. Do some of the qualities of God's love for you surprise you? Which ones?
8. In Matthew 5:43-45, Jesus gives us an example of how to love others with the love described in I Corinthians 13. He presents a process we can follow to love even those who hate us. What is this process?
9. Can you think of a situation in your life right now where God is asking you to love someone with His love? How can you apply what you have learned to that situation?
10. Do you have any questions, or comments? Would you like me to pray for something for you?
