Choose Patience: Whole-Hearted Enduring

Written by admin

Patience! Patience!

I have lost count of the times I have said this to my children. I don’t remember how many times my parents said it to me.
But I think it was nearly daily.

The word patience used in Galatians 5:22 has also been translated long-suffering, or, suffering long. It is especially used in talking about an attitude to adopt in our relationships with one another.

In this study, we will look at how God demonstrates patience toward us to help us understand what it means to be patient with one another.

Questions to consider:

What is patience, in your opinion? How would you define it? Do you agree that it is only in suffering that patience can be demonstrated? What hinders the development of patience? What helps develop patience? Is patience considered a virtue by our society? Why or why not?

Read 2 Peter 3:8-18 several times; then answer the following questions:

1. Why has Christ’s return not yet occurred? More thoughts...
Why is God waiting? What does he wish to see occur?
2. What should we be waiting for and hastening, according to Peter?
3. What should be our focus and our purpose while we patiently await the fulfilment of the promise?
4. The story of the Prodigal Son found in Luke 15. 11-32 gives a powerful image of God’s patience towards us. Read the text slowly several times before answering the following questions. How does the father react to his youngest son’s demand? Why do you think the father responds that way? Would you have responded that way to such a request? Why or why not?
5. How does the son come to his senses? What does he come to realize?
6. What is the father’s response when the son returns? Where is he when he sees the son? What does he do? What do you think of his response?
7. Is this God’s response towards us when we repent (return whole-heartedly to Him)? Do you think most people see repentance in this light?
8. What has the prodigal son lost? Do we also lose out when we rebel against God the Father and go our own way? If so, in what ways? If not, why not?
9. What does this story teach you about God’s patience towards you and all men? More thoughts...
In what ways does reflecting on the amazing patience of God towards you help you become more patient with others?
10. Do you have any questions, or comments? Would you like me to pray for something for you?
