1. What are some common ways you deal with shame? More thoughts...
Read Genesis 2:16-3:12. What did Adam and Eve do when they felt ashamed of their disobedience? They hid from God and they blamed others for their sinfulness. Many years have passed since the days of Adam and Eve, yet we still attempt to deal with our shame in these same ways!
2. Why do you often bury your hurts and difficulties?
3. When you hide your hurts, what is the result? More thoughts...
Read Ecclesiastes 4:9-10. If we hide our hurts and do not share them with those who are close to us, we feel alone and become weaker. When we confess what we are ashamed of to a close friend, a parent or a spiritual mentor, we are able to become stronger because we can gain encouragement and accountability from that person.
4. How do you break a cycle of silence? More thoughts...
Read Proverbs 28:13. It does no good for us to conceal things in our lives. If we confess and renounce these things, we can have faith that God will bring us mercy.
5. What sources of help are available for you? More thoughts...
Where can you turn when you need freedom from shame? 1) Turn to God – Romans 10:10-11 promises that if we trust in Jesus, He will take away all our shame. 2) Turn to a friend – If we are able to share with someone close to us about our shameful secrets, we can gain some support and encouragement and grow stronger as it says in Ecclesiastes 4:12.
6. How can you regain freedom in your life once again? More thoughts...
Isaiah 61:7 promises us that if we confess our sinfulness and accept Jesus as our Saviour, we will not be ashamed any longer- instead we have hope that Jesus has conquered sin through His death on the cross.
