Finding Freedom in Forgiveness

Written by admin

Feelings are hurt, bitterness runs deep and the grudge has taken root. Before we realize it we are steeped in negative emotions that bind us. Finding forgiveness sets us free from these chains, but how do we allow ourselves to make that choice? Join us in this study as we look at how forgiveness can bring freedom.

1. Describe what forgiveness means to you.
2. Is forgiveness an option or an obligation? More thoughts...
God warns us many times throughout the Bible that there are negative consequences if we decide to hold a grudge against someone who has hurt us. Jesus said in Matthew 5:22 that if we remain angry, we will “be subject to judgement”. Psalm 37:8 also warns that we should not remain angry because “it leads only to evil.”
3. Does forgiveness need emotion with it or is it just a decision? More thoughts...
It’s important to make a conscious decision to forgive those around us, but we also must be sure that it is genuine. Luke 6:45 says that the overflow of a man’s heart will be reflected in his words and decisions. Our forgiveness of others should be the result of a change in our minds and our hearts!
4. What is your motive in forgiveness? More thoughts...
Our motivation behind forgiving others should not just be for our own benefit. We should also be motivated to forgive because we know we have also been forgiven (Ephesians 4:32), we love God and want to obey him (1 John 4:21) and out of love for those who hurt us (Colossians 3:12-14).
5. What is the cost of forgiveness for you?
6. How do you allow an attitude of forgiveness to become a way of life? More thoughts...
Read Colossians 2:6-7. Through living in Christ, He changes our hearts and we become “rooted” in Him, growing in godly characteristics.
7. What freedoms does forgiveness bring for you?
8. Where do you find the strength and resolve to forgive? More thoughts...
God is the source of our strength. 1 Thessalonians 3:12-13 says that God will increase our love for those around us and strengthen our hearts to do things that are pleasing to Him.
