Finding Hope When it Hurts

SufferingVideo Watch Dawson McAllister’s powerful video hereas an introduction to this study!C. S. Lewis once said “God whispers to us in our pleasures, speaks in our conscience, but shouts in our pains: it is His megaphone to rouse a deaf world.” Lewis was not unacquainted with suffering in his own life. His book A Grief Observed Lewis pours out his heart after the death of his wife, Joy Gresham.

Another man who is acquainted with grief, radio host and author Dawson McAllister. He speaks to an average of half a million listeners per week on his radio show, but in this video he reflects poignantly about his son’s accident. Like Lewis, he is a man who is not a fan of cliches and easy answers, but desires to grapple honestly with the truth. In dealing with times of suffering, “Either you’ll become better, or you’ll become bitter,” he says, “but you won’t be the same again.”

1. What did you think of Dawson McAllister's quote: "Either you'll become better, or you'll become bitter, but you won't be the same again." More thoughts...
How do you see this idea at work in your own life experiences and own response to suffering?
2. What kinds of sufferings, pain, or disappointments have you faced in your life? More thoughts...
The point of this question is not to reopen old wounds, but rather to provide a space to honestly pour out your troubles, for your own release and so that your mentor will have some understanding of the kinds of things you've been dealing with.
3. Where do you find comfort in desperate times? More thoughts...
There are always alternatives. Your mentor may be able to provide a patient listening ear, and/or recommend helpful resources.
4. Have you ever learned an important lesson or experienced personal growth through a difficult time? More thoughts...
Is there any possible good you can see coming out of your trials? The answer may be "No, I can't see how anything good could possibly come out of this." That doesn't necessarily mean there will be no good, it just may mean that you can't see it yet.
5. How have your experiences influenced your view of God? More thoughts...
What role do you believe God has in your suffering? Is a person's faith in God dependent on their circumstances?
6. When we suffer, do we often have a desire to "figure it all out"? But even if people got more exact answers to they "why" questions, would that cure our suffering? More thoughts...
Sometimes trying to figure it all out is futile, and won't address the hurt we feel. "Trust God from the bottom of your heart; don’t try to figure out everything on your own. Listen for God’s voice in everything you do, everywhere you go; he’s the one who will keep you on track." Proverbs 3:5-6 (Msg)
7. How could your experiences help you care for others who are going through difficult circumstances? More thoughts...
Could they help you counsel others? Or be a more compassionate, comforting listener? "You [God] keep track of all my sorrows. You have collected all my tears in your bottle. You have recorded each one in your book." Psalm 56:8 (NLT)
8. What do you think of C. S. Lewis' quote: "God whispers to us in our pleasures, speaks in our conscience, but shouts in our pains: it is His megaphone to rouse a deaf world." More thoughts...
Do you think that it is true? Is the world often "deaf" to God? Even if it is true, does it bring any comfort during times of distress? What do you think God has to say to you today? "Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about you." 1 Peter 5:7 (NLT)
9. Are there additional thoughts or unanswered questions that you have as a result of this study?
10. Please pray for me in these areas: More thoughts...
Millions of people around the world turn to prayer and the Bible as a source of help when dealing with difficult situations. Both offer comfort and the realization that you are not alone in this - there is hope and help. God is the ultimate source of help.
